Well, I may be older than you, but oddly my mother never said a bad word about African Americans. OTOH, she made it clear that she didn't like rednecks. A redneck is a southern hick; there are northern hicks --- how are they better? We talked about getting gypped, but I didn't know that it had anything to do with gypsies. I thought it was spelled with a "J." My mother looked down on farmers. Her ancestors were farmers. My mother liked to move from state to state every year. I would call her a gypsy unaware that that could be taken as an insult.

I don't know what we're allowed to say.

I was referring to levels of classes within races, even if self imposed, they do exist. The Rom people as an ethnic group are one tribe but have multiple sub groups.

It seems that the problem is the word "jipped" which Wiktionary says is. Probably from the term gypsy (“Roma”), due to a stereotype of the Roma as swindlers.

I didn't choose to grow up learning bad words. I didn't even know that was an unacceptable word.

Well, what can you do except not say that anymore.

A church we're affiliated with witnesses to gypsies specifically, so I don't think we as Christians should use it.

But jipped is such a uncommon word that I imagine most people have no idea of its origins. Thus its ok to use. More so because one uses it offensively.

If we worry about every word that is said or some word that may offend someone from another country, we might as well become mimes.

It isn't. Use the word as you'd like. What a lot of ridiculous nonsense this PC stuff is! The etymology of a words is not always useful in determining its current meaning or character.

I've never met a gypsy. I don't think I've used the word jipped/gypped in 15 years until the other day.

When my husband was in college, a woman chastised him for saying something about our Heavenly Father. He replied, "Resist the devil and she will flee from you."

Where did you get this "fact"?

I've never heard of this "teaching" among my family.

I understand your post and what you are trying to say. I agree that many become offended to easily.

I also see how the same stereotypes and prejudices arise when the word "gypsy" is used. My family is Hungarian Romani. We are a hard working people, hospitable and giving. We are not thieves, we are not dirty, we are not illiterate. Although there are some Roma who are these things, just as there are good people and bad people in every race and culture.

You probably have met a gypsy, they just aren't telling you who they are. It pays to be cautious about how much information you give to strangers.

I think many words can be used in ignorance. Many years ago I used to express being tired by saying "I'm knackered" until I was informed it had some sort of sexual connection - one it had acquired, not one that I can see the term had originally - I think it refers to a knackers yard. It meant tired, or worn out from work, before it had any sexual connotation.

I heard the word decades ago to describe being ripped off or cheated. Did not know it referred to an ethnic group. Had not heard or read it in a long time.

Media is controlled by Communists. But I also read that Megyn was somewhat egotistical. May she rest in peace.

I can't stand Megyn Kelly.. never could. She started out okay but then got famous and changed for the worse. But, that's the story of many a famous person. I'm sure she will write a book..

She doesn't seem the type to have saved anything from her 15 minutes for her retirement, so her lifestyle will have to change. She'll go kicking and screaming over that alone.

Honestly, I think there are many ways the internet is changing our society. I read a study showing who in our society is most concerned with politically correct speech, and it's actually inline with who needs to be most concerned with it.

Those most affected by the necessities and dictates of politically correct speech are journalists, professors, advertisers, those who deal with a greater public than most of our comparatively insulated lives, and those whose jobs are affected by the greater public.

For example: If your an advertiser you don't want to offend a segment of society as your goal is to make a product desirable to anyone with cash, so your going to concern yourself heavily with speech and what might offend.

We live in a small, rural, largely white town. The concerns of speech, even at a place of employment here aren't the same as the concerns of someone teaching University in New York, or someone with an internationally popular cooking show or a journalist. And that is similar for the majority of Americans even in far larger towns, because people are often insulated from those outside their own people-group.

Those whose speech is heard by millions or by a diverse group of impressionable people on the other hand, have a need to pay attention to every word out of their mouths.

In other words, most people never even considered what they say because they never needed to.

Then the internet happened, and overnight every person on the planet has an audience, every word is seen by all and not just our insulated groups of yesterday and it's overwhelming because overnight you have to learn an entirely different manner of speaking, or risk offending everyone by months end.

I think most people decided it's too much, and took on the schoolyard teaching "sticks and stones may break my bones but words will never hurt me".

I do think even in this ever changing world of pc speech we should take care with our speech because we all have a diverse and global audience similar to the journalist today, but in the end I dont believe it should ever bleed into or affect political speech.

For example: If I want to share a concern over illegal immigration I ought to be able to do that without dealing with people who can't manage an understanding of the definition of illegal alien or without an accusation of racism because I mentioned we have a process for legal immigration that should be followed. These things are matters of national policy and using inaccurate accusations of "offensive speech" or accusations of racism to silence your political opponents is far more wrong than any offense that might be had due to the conversation topic naturally.

So, it's rather a strange topic. On the one hand we should have more concern when online with our normal speech, but in the same breath that concern cannot be used to silence appropriate political speech of national concern.

I think sometimes we don't even know what we find offensive until someone offends us.

Pretty much people can call me a lot of things and it doesn't bother me. The C word, the B word, all good, a philistine I'm fine, heck you can even call me things like lazy or stupid and I'm not in the least offended. When people counseled my husband not to marry me because I might behead him in his sleep and he took a "hold my beer" attitude I laughed...

But call me a Canaanite and I'm red in the face angry.... accuse me of being demon possessed and I'm not hurt, I'm crushed and just in tears.

And, it's irrational. Lol.. I don't even know why those things bother me so much, but they aren't necessarily going to bother someone else and I can't or shouldn't expect the world to stop because of it.

I believe that so long as we aren't using terms in an effort to hurt others we should be okay as Christians..

It’s easy, the new trend is to come here and work, while sending the money back to your children. Nobody wants to raise a family in America unless they’re escaping crime or some sort of war. Canada and the UK are a lot better, less ignorant probably due to better education systems.

I wouldn't be name-calling. It's not Christian in the first place.

As for the C word.. I didn't even know there was a C word related to blacks that was racist. The only one I know of is the name of a womanly part often used in derogatory fashion toward some women.
