I gotta be honest...I don't have a clue who's right or wrong in this case because the facts never get mentioned in this article, or any other articles I have read on the matter.

Did the company secure the rights to build the pipeline through proper legal channels? If so, then the protesters are wrong and should be removed if they cannot be arrested. Did the company bypass proper legal channels and try T9 build on land they have no right to build on? Because in that case, the police and military should turn the hoses on the construction crews and arrest them if they will not cease.

Since, generally speaking, the police are on the correct side of the laws on these matters ...I'm inclined to think the protesters are wrong and should stop trying to fight a battle they lost 200 years ago.

The SS were on the correct side of the law, too.

Really? Cuz I'm fairly certain that storming into France with tanks and soldiers and murdering the population is against the law there....but I'll fully admit I'm not a French lawyer.

After a cursory glance, it seems eminent domain laws apply to tribal land as well....so I'm inclined to think that the construction of the pipeline is entirely legal.

If they had a legal case to make, they should've made it. I can't support this anymore than I could support that douchebag Ammon Bundy who also thought he was entitled to decide for himself which laws he had to follow and which he could ignore....or resist.

Ammon Bundy, however, never got firehosed or shot at with rubber bullets, which I think is a lot of the issue here; the double standard. I know it's the big glaring red issue for me, any way.

What? Are those things illegal in America? No wonder Europe has been such a mess ever since the Rome fell... Darn.

That was not the SS.

That was the Wehrmacht.

I think SS was there? Waffen SS was found before the war, and afaik, it took part in most of the major campaigns. At least these incidents happened during the Battle of France:

Without wishing to get into a whole big historical thing, and appreciate also I was trying to avoid a direct Godwin, but my basic point was that the actions of the SS that are today considered "crime against humanity" were "legal". TL;DR? "Legal" =/= just or ethical.

Nice try, but I'm not gonna let anyone off the hook here until all the historical inaccuracies with this whole "Where was Waffen-SS during the war in Europe" - thing have been sorted out, which is totally important for the topic of police water cannons and pipeline protesters on the other side of the world 70 years later.

I expect everyone making even minor, or irrelevant inaccuracies in their historical references, to bear full responsibility for their crimes and face the fury of the Insensitive History Nerds United!

If I remember correctly, they not only had panzer divisions but armed infantry as well....and they killed a lot of people. So regardless of whether or not they participated as frontline troops....my characterization isn't at all inaccurate.

No...not to my knowledge. I don't remember any firehoses or rubber bullets either. There also wasn't a large corporation trying to legally build a pipeline that they had ....you know, got permission to legally build.

My guess is that if Bundy and his band of rednecks had blocked the enterprise of a billion dollar industry....not just grazed on land he wasn't supposed to graze on...the reaction would've been more severe.

I don't think that's really the issue for you though, is it? If the police were just arresting the natives for trespassing on a construction site....with no water hoses or rubber bullets...would you suddenly be against the protesters?

What do you think my issue is, then? Genuinely curious to know.

Sounds inhumane to me.

Again, this is how the United States government has always dealt with their 'Indian problem', with violence and brutality.

Here are three videos I would like to recommend for you to watch.

Fair enough...you're against water hoses and rubber bullets. What are your feelings about rocks, and burning logs?

https://www.google.com/amp/amp.usatoday.com/story/94196572/

From that story...

"It said law enforcement officers “had rocks thrown at them, burning logs and rocks shot from slingshots,” and that one officer had been hit on the head by a thrown rock."

For me, personally, I feel like hoses and rubber bullets is about the proper response to such aggression. True, a thrown rock to the head is potentially life threatening....but those are probably "peace rocks" with some sort of sacred significance and they just wanted to share them with the police lol.

Aaaand this is exactly why I hate reading anything about hot issues because they're all so biased depending who tells the story.

In one version you have evil police invading Indian lands and testing their new gear on women and children for giggles and in another version you have people sabotaging public and private property and getting violent with law enforcement and then playing victims when there is a response. In the end you're just left confused about what's going on.

The pipeline is not on indigenous land. The majority of the protesters are not indigenous and represent paid agitators with anarchist leanings.
The place for action is in the courts.
The fact is that private property has been destroyed by agitators in the area of over $1 million dollars of damage.
I have no sympathy for law breakers who violently protest.
