Police fire water cannon at Dakota pipeline protesters in freezing weather
Police fired tear gas and water at hundreds of protesters in the freezing North Dakota weather late Sunday and early Monday, in the latest violent clash over a pipeline project running through the state.

An estimated 400 protesters mounted the Backwater Bridge just north of Cannon Ball, North Dakota, and attempted to force their way past police in what the Morton County Sheriff's Department described as an "ongoing riot."

The $3.7 billion Dakota Access project has drawn steady opposition from activists since the summer, led by the Standing Rock Sioux tribe, whose tribal lands are adjacent to the pipeline. Native American activists and environmentalists say the line threatens water resources and sacred tribal lands.

If there's one thing we simply will not tolerate here in America is its people exercising their constitutional rights and expecting the government to honor its treaties.

The police are using dogs and water cannons to brutalize a population, for them this is a chance to use all the toys given to them when the police became more militarized.

They have been used long before they got free military gear.

I am sure this is a touchy issue, but as an outsider I can't really get a clear picture of what's going on there. I watched some youtube footage and it made me suspect that the protest hasn't been exactly peaceful all the time either. There was a fist fight and I read about a protester firing a gun into the security. etc.

So, are they just sitting there trying to demonstrate against the construction, or are they like actively trying to block the construction by force? If the latter is the case, isn't it the duty of the police to remove them from the site?

There are treaties involved?

The Treaty of 1851 to be exact.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Treaty_of_Fort_Laramie_(1851)

But the US government's track record of actually honoring its treaties with the indigenous peoples and nations is one of its absolute worst--and America has a lot of terrible track records. What is going on and being protested is literally just another incident in a very long list of over two hundred years of total and complete disregard for the native people of this land.

According to the United States Constitution Article VI, all treaties made, or which shall be made, under the authority of the United States, shall be the supreme law of the land. The government has been violating the Constitution it swore to uphold.

Not when to comes to Native Americans, no. The Alcatraz Island Occupation, which lasted 19 months (November 20, 1969 to June 11, 1971) was forcibly ended by the United States government, as was the 71 day Wounded Knee Occupation in 1973.

Seeing this, you would think they were facing off against an armed insurrection.

Typical United States government response to their 'Indian problem' and it has been this way throughout America's history.

I'm honestly surprised that there has been no death yet.. has there?

Not yet. However, one water protector had part of her arm blown off by a concession grenade (Source). Another water protector now has a detached retina after being hit in the face with tear gas launcher (Source). An elder went into cardiac arrest during Sunday's brutal attack by riot police (Source). There have also been multiple reports of water protectors and media reporters injured from being shot with rubber bullets, beanbags, and tear gas (Source).

Army Corps of Engineers shutting down DAPL protest camp due to concerns for public safety
According to the Morton County Sheriff's Office, The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers wants all people camping on its property north of the Cannonball River to leave by Dec. 5.

The Corps sent a letter to Standing Rock Tribal Chairman Dave Archambault Nov. 25, saying the decision is to protect the general public from violent confrontations between protesters and law enforcement in that area.

He also says the decision was made to protect inhabitants of the camps from the harsh North Dakota winter and that medical, emergency and fire response teams cannot be provided.

Anyone on the property after Dec. 5 will be considered trespassing and may be subject to arrest.

The Corps says it has also set up a "free speech zone" land south of the Cannonball River for anyone wishing to peacefully protest the Dakota Access Pipeline.
The place would be safe if the militarized police wasn't shooting people with rubber ammunition, using tear gas, throwing concussion grenades, and spraying people with water hose in subzero temperatures.
