  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Amazing. And we'll see even better images soon. This gave me a lump in my throat this morning when I woke up and did my daily "What's new with Pluto today" routine I've been doing for the past 2 weeks.

That IS an incredible picture! Thank you for sharing it.

If it's true, prove it.

"In the beginning God Created the Heaven and the Earth." ( Genesis 1:1 KJV )!!

"So God created man in his own image, in the image of God created he him; male and female created he them." ( Genesis 1:27 KJV )

1) In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.

2) The same was in the beginning with God.

3) All things were made by Him; and without Him was not any thing made that was made.

4) In Him was life; and the life was the light of men. ( John 1:1-4 KJV )

16) For God so loved the world, that He gave Sis only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in Him should not perish, but have everlasting life.

17) For God sent not His Son into the world to condemn the world; but that the world through Him might be Saved. ( John 3:16-17 KJV )

I watched news coverage of an interview with the scientists. They were showing the photographs coming back from the spacecraft. The highlight was when they zoomed in on a high definition, 150 mile patch of the surface. There was a gasp of awe followed by applause from those who were present. It was breathtaking. This is an historic moment in space exploration.

Annndddd the bible is not proof.
Maybe not for some, but for others, It's more than proof.[VERSE=2 Peter 1:19,KJV]We have also a more sure word of prophecy; whereunto ye do well that ye take heed, as unto a light that shineth in a dark place, until the day dawn, and the day star arise in your hearts:[/VERSE]

And again, someone somewhere else in the world believes their holy book is "the one". Different people, different God, different beliefs, and they all think they're right.

We call them "cults."

What do you call them?

I guess I'd consider them all cults. Some benign, some not. That includes Christianity as well. But since I'm a nice guys I'll refer to all of them as religions.

Getting back on topic...

We have another closeup, this time of Charon.
https://www.nasa.gov/image-feature/new-horizons-close-up-of-charon-s-mountain-in-a-moat
It's a bit blurry, but we can see some craters, along with the 'mountain in a moat' near the top left of the zoom-in.

nh-charon-inset.jpg

Yeah, I was trying to pick out which craters were older than the others, there's two craters a third of the way down in the close-up where they overlap slightly. The smaller crater there is older since the bigger one overlapping it is still circular. That mountain is really interesting too, I wonder how that was formed.

Funny thing, the dark patch at the North Pole is nicknamed Mordor. Ha.

Thanks for sharing the pic!

One thing I find fascinating about the close up of Pluto, is that the mountains you can see are likely quite young, no more than 100 million years old most likely! And Charon's terrain seems quite young due to the lack of craters over the surface. This means that it's quite likely that Pluto and Charon, or at least parts of it, might have some sort of active geological process! It can't be heat due to gravity interactions with another body, as Charon and Pluto are tidally locked with each other. It might be some new process we haven't discovered yet!

Every new picture we get holds new answers and new questions! This is so exciting!

Does a lack of craters have to mean geological activity. Could it also mean an absence of meteors. Just asking cause not clear how you would prove this either way.

I don't think Pluto is large enough for a molten mantle that would produce volcanos. We're talking about extreme conditions here--how much do we know about how frozen nitrogen craters when struck by a meteor?

And Jupiter emits quite a bit of radiation that would keep Europa warmer than Pluto (not to mention that Europa gets a heck of a lot more radiation from the Sun than Pluto does).

Do you need a bigger gravity well to be truly attractive to meteors. Just wondering if like antman size does matter!
