  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Pluto May Become A Planet Again

Article is tagged as "distraction" for a reason.

Distraction perhaps for the white-coated scientists! But one of the most earth-shatteringly important topics to REAL scientists like AV1611VET.

This whole Pluto thing has got to stop. Frankly, when I come into my job every day as a scientist I begin to wonder what the point of "truth" is anymore since Pluto was demoted.

Most of us in the sciences have simply given up on investigating reality and prefer now to wear silly hats and dance about.

We still get paid (because we have the white lab coats) but any assessment of reality went out the window when Pluto was demoted.

Now up is down and black is white.

There is no truth anymore until that blessed day when a random chunk of rock in a sea of similarly sized chunks of rocks in the same general area is re-labeled with the "P-word".

On that day TRUTH will reign supreme!

Selah!

The point is that the whole fiasco about whether or not Pluto counts as a planet is a joke. What bugs me the most about it though is that for some reason there are different standards for what constitutes a planet in our solar system than how we count them in other solar systems, and I find that ridiculous.

And nothing would actually happen to Pluto or its properties or our knowledge about it.
Then why demote it?

The Periodic Table of the Elements started out at what? about ten elements?

Now there's over twelve times that many.

Should the elements be demoted?

I missed pluto.

The Aricebo message that scientists sent into space shows the earth as the third planet from the sun among nine planets.

Supposedly there are only eight planets.

No wonder aliens can't find us -- scientists sent them on a wild goose chase.

AV, after seeing your countless posts about the tragedy of Pluto it has proven to me that my career has been a lie.

You see I went into science thinking science got things right on occasion. And I even used to think that FACTS meant something (you know like the FACT that the word planet did not have a technical definition before 2005 and this is all just a matter of definition and not really a factually important thing). But now I see science for the NEST OF LIES it all is!

I have started thinking perhaps, since I've spent my life pursuing something that doesn't exist (scientific truth) then maybe it's time for a change.

Perhaps I'll go into the ministry or something.

Either way, science died when Pluto was re-defined as not a full planet. It means NOTHING science has EVER DONE was good. NOTHING.

Everything we do today that involves science is part of the BIG LIE. Even this computer!

Pluto was never not a planet.

But it was our ninth planet: as in 9 of 9.

How many men on a baseball team? nine?

Then who are those guys in the dugout? reporters?

Did you know that a tomato is actually a fruit?

MORE LIES FROM SCIENCE! Next thing you know the white-coated bullies will tell us dophins aren't fish! EVEN THOUGH THEY SWIM IN WATER ALL THE TIME!

Geezly!

I long for the days when bats were birds...as God intended.

Then why demote it?

To prove their iron-fisted rule! To show up good people like YOU! To put you in your place!

They knew that if they did this they'd make you scream! And they are powered by your tears.

The Periodic Table of the Elements started out at what? about ten elements?

Yeah! You show 'em! Periodic table. Pshaw! Stupid scientists.

Now there's over twelve times that many.

How'd that happen????

Should the elements be demoted?

Probably. I mean just because PLUTO!

The Periodic Table makes me mad! And I have to use it since I'm a chemist! Or I was until I decided that Pluto showed me science is all a lie!

You ever notice how there's no element that is just the letter "E". I wonder why that is. I bet it is a nefarious plan by the WHITE COATED THUGS to keep us from being able to spell out Lie using only element symbols!

Grrrrrrr, science!

UTTERLY BRILLIANT POINT!

(All joking aside, there actually is a patent law case in which the question of whether "3" was included in "4" was taken up....you can read about it HERE)

A chemist harping on science, using Pluto as an example?

What's wrong? did you forget about Thalidomide?

Clean up your own lab first.

What's your point? Pluto is still there. It's still a planet, it just has a more concise definition attached to it.

I know you're mad because the magic number "9" is important to you for some theological reason that I can't remember right now. But just, seriously...
