  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.
  • We hope the site problems here are now solved, however, if you still have any issues, please start a ticket in Contact Us

Hey, I know exactly how you feel. I was very hesitant when trying to talk with my parish about joining. I'm not entirely sure why, but there is something about it that held me back, even though I knew with all my heart it was the right thing and I'd be Catholic one day.

I'll certainly pray for you. Just remember, the process is one little step at a time, so don't think of it as a big deal. You are just asking the Priest a couple of questions :)

Hi :)

If you are not baptized, I would guess you will be required to go thru RCIA. Believe me, I tried to get around it. It really doesn't hurt to wait a few months and go thru the classes, meet some people, get to know your priest and be sure to attend Mass every Sunday during the conversion process.

Er, you have to go through an educational process one way or another, don't you?

To some extent I'm sure. In theory an already baptized Christian shouldn't have to go to RCIA, and should have less to learn. If you are not baptized, you are generally peg-holed as not being educated as a Christian (thus a Catechumen), where if you are baptized you are peg-holed as having had some or even a great amount of Christian education (thus a Candidate and already give "christian" status, because a valid baptism is the gateway sacrament). Given that many are baptized as children then not educated and on the other side many in Christian sects that don't require baptism some people don't fit those general molds. I wasn't baptized until I converted, about a week before my 40th birthday, but I had been raised Christian.

Most priests being busy will have everyone go thru RCIA to be sure they get at least the basics on all the major areas. The classes have to be one-size-fit-all. Trying to cover those who are just marrying a Catholic and might not even be really interested in converting but forced to go by their future spouse, to those who are more like the people here who will be fairly well-educated on the beliefs before even attending. I had covered most of the education process on my own before RCIA, and RCIA was more important for me to become familiar with people - the community, the priest, and to start actually attending Mass and see how the beliefs are present in the liturgy.
