This is a good discussion...i have a friend that doesnt like hillsong and planetshakers. it's interesting the views that people have...

It's not a mosh pit! its a praise pit!

and the people were screaming coz they were giving praise to God!

in terms of difference, the only difference is the sermon. if u think it's quieter during the day...its not!...sometimes its louder! hahaha
yeah the music was heaps loud! if your not young then its probably hard to accept rock in Praise and Worship. coz in 70s or 60s music, churches was quiet and organ. sooo...WELCOME TO THE 21st Century Church!

the pastors were pretty old, and they're still jumping and loving the presence of God. and Danny gugllielmucci said that "he doesnt want to be limited by his age, when his praising God". how do u think God feels if He see's his people Worshiping Him wif ALL that they have!!

let's not focus on the technicality of Hillsong or Planetshakers, they are doing what God wants. they're reaching out, they're helping the poor, they're saving souls, they're spreading the gospel.

is it wrong for them to have loud music in order to bring people to Christ? sometimes its because of loud music people are coming to Christ!

IT IS WRITTEN. when one soul is saved all the angels in heaven is rejoicing !!! Luke 15

I agree with some of what you say - However the comment about Welcome to the church of the 21st century was unwarranted.

God can move through whatever music he chooses to, that includes rock music, it also includes classical music, or even 1 or 2 people playing accoustic guitar with a bunch of people sitting around a campfire.

God said that whenever 2 or 3 are gathered in his name - he is there with them (sorry, not sure of the reference but I know it's in there)

No it is not wrong for churches to have loud music and all that - not wrong at all, it's just that some people prefer a quieter service, and the churches that have quieter services are still part of the "21st Century"

hahaha yeah sorry i worded it wrong...

i meant welcome to the youth of the 21st century...

yeah my main church service is quieter...than the youth...

last time we were leading the main service. and the old people were so scared...coz the drummer was so loud. hahaha.

and yeah its true God can move in any music. if u bring rock into the country, then it wont be as effective aye!

But God still deserves to be Praised with ALL we've got right?? even if were sick or old right!! (my youth leader saw a kid in wheelchair, praising God by jumping wif their arms, he was pushing himself up and down. and my youth leader felt so small)

I know the song you are talking about and the line "somebody get your praise on" originated from last years conference when reggie dabbs was preaching. If you dont know him he is a large african american man from florida USA, and the best youth communicator in the world. He used this line in his preaching along with many others that have made it famous in Planet Shakers songs such as "who got da praise" "we got da praise" "who ya give your praise too" "jesus"!!!
Planet shakers takes a bit of getting used to... but i think its fantastic for the young people... i am 21 yrs old now and have been for the last 4 years, and i must say that it is starting to wear off, but when i was younger i thought it was the greatest thing ever. I believe it is a phenomenal conference for youth because it speaks to them. Yes its like a concert but thats what is relevant to the youth of today. Planet shakers is a youth movement whos aim is to enter the world of young people and touch them where THEY are at...i think alot of churches can learn alot from Planet Shakers (including mine)..in saying this i dont believe we have to have church like a planet shakers night, all im saying is that if our churches were relevant to todays society (and thus realistic about people getting saved) then we would all have much bigger churches than those we attend...
Sorry if this is a little long.
No offence is meant by this in anyway, im just very fired up and passionate..
God Bless

It's the behaviour that would concern me. Would you have a big high-energy mass with heaps of screaming and jumping for somebody's funeral for instance? Or would you want something a bit more sombre?

We have what is known as tradition. Not everyone appreciates loud music, especially those who are over the age of 60 and have hearing problems. People aren't alike.

I have my own way of giving praise to God, and if others don't like it or understand it then it isn't my right to pass judgement on them. Diff'rent strokes for diffrent folks.

Planetshakers isn't for everyone, regardless of whether Christian or not anymore than CNC events would be for everyone.

I think one of the major problems is that there are many different worship styles and everyone doesnt agree with them.
In my particular church we have many older people who like their older music, us younger people respect that, we stand and sing the praises of the older music to our God, it might not be our style but we do it as a sign of respect to God and to the older people in our church.
HERES WHERE THE PROBLEM LIES.........
When we do get a chance to play any modern worship music the youth are the only ones who stand and sing. The older people sit down and just watch...The older generation dont pay the same respect to our music as we do to theres.
If we are completly realisic about our society we need to see that if the music doesnt change we wont drawer any new christians to the church and the church dies in a generation. WE DONT ALL NEED TO BE LOUD LIKE PLANET SHAKERS.
BUT we do need to be relevant to society, and let go of traditions for the sake of our beloved churches or they will die. its innevitable.

Out of respect to the older people, maybe they just don't feel comfortable or don't know the words. I know that I don't normally sing new songs at church at first because I don't know the words (actually here's another point - I fondly remember the short choruses that you could easily remember and now they're gone - I get lost with the songs that have 3 verses and a chorus)

I love rock music... i've seen over 100 rock bands in the last four years so rock music is very relevant to me.
I really didnt like the music at planetshakers. I could not praise my God in that way... i just cant.

ok...

we all served the same God right?...(im hearing 'my God', 'my own way of Praising God')

it is wriiten! !!!

"Our fathers Worshiped on this mountain, but you jews claim that the place of where we worship is in jerusalem"...John 4:20

"Jesus declared, 'believe me, ..., a time is coming when you will worship the father neither on this mountain nor in Jerusalem"...John4:21

"Yet a TIME is coming and has NOW come when the true worshippers will worship the Father IN SPIRIT and IN TRUTH, For they are the kind of Worshiped the Father seeks"

dont matter about Style of Worship. if u worship Him in spirit and in truth...it's all good!!! This is the way of Praising God!!! because it is written!!!

i go to an indonesian church, the main service is in indo, sing indo songs, its slow and not in english...we could just sit down and observe and criticize...but we shuold learn to worship God in every places in every circumstances!...It's still God that we all worship and praise!

wat chaplain said is true...we got to get rid of tradition...if we praised God the ways they did in King David's time...i dont think people in this generation will be saved...

they used harps....now imagine using a harp!...hahhaa...i dont even knw if harp is still being taught much...

but instead of a harp, its a guitar!
instead of tambourines its drums!

and if u can play with EVERYTHIGN YOU GOT, giving God everything, then why not???

Planet Shakers was amazing!!!
Thats the sort of music teens listen to now and they were showing that church doesnt have to be boring and slow. That following Jesus is funa and exciting.
I know that Planet Shakers this year brought many teens to and closer to God.
Also there was still worship and the main part of the conference were the sermons.
Personally I loved planet Shakers and every person I have talked to from my church so far has loved it as well
The main problem, which has been mentioned before is that everyone has different tastes in music....and I do agree now when I think about it some songs may have been a bit over the top but overall I think they did a good job. They really did impact a lot of peoples lives....
And i will leave now because I am rambling and probobly dont make much sense anway... i am still really tired :p

lol... Well it looks like I am going to Planetshakers.... though not in a way I was expecting.... apparently while I am in Perth my cousins are going to take me to a night session at Perth Planet Shakers... I enjoy seeing other Christians worship... and I reckon i'll enjoy Planet Shakers... though self admitedly I am a bit too strange in my music taste, I tend to opt for the old longies (when I survey, My hope is Built, Rock of Ages, And can it Be?), along with a couple of the new ones... they express the truth of Jesus and what he's done for us in such a deep and beautiful way... "When I survey the Wonderous Cross on which the Prince of Glory Died, My richest gain, I count but loss, and poor contempt on all my pride , Forbid it lord that I should boast save in the cross of christ my god, all the vain things thta charm me most, I sacrafise them to his blood, see from his head, his hands his feet, sorrow and love flow mingled down, did er such love and sorrow meet or thorns compose so rich a crown", etc.... Ahhhhh soo beautiful.... so the rest of you youngins' dont forget the beauty of the old songs... truly for me they have been such a source of encouragement... even though I am also a fan of hillsong and contemporary christian praise songs.... I reckon you'd like Summer School Bev... the place has about as many oldies as they do younin's (20-30)... and they play songs likle that one I just gave the lyrics to before... and also hearing about the missionaries... ahhhh... soo encouraging... It really makes you re-consider how you are doing your own mision work in your own context... Anyway are there any people from the W.A planetshakers... how has it been so far you guys?...

Your Brother in Christ

I've been to Shakers a couple of times in the past but I probably wouldn't go now because I've changed my mind on a lot of things theology wise.

I have to say that they do get some great speakers from overseas. Guys like Glen Berteau, Benny Perez and Chris Hill are simply amazing to listen to. I will probably go and see Chris Hill speak when he is at the City church.

In the past I would have defended that sort of worship to the hilt, I was brought up AOG all the way and never questioned anything. While I have nothing against the style of music (or how loud it is, even if I have to wear earplugs now) what I don't really agree with anymore is the majority of lyrics that are used, which is what I think Rachael mentioned at the beginning.

What I worry about is that most of the lyrics are us-centred eg. I love you, I can feel you, rain down on me, touch me....me me me I I I etc. rather than God-centred. I think there are times and places for both but recently there is a lot more me me me I I I than God is....God you are etc.

I only came to realise this over the past 18 months, during which I have and continue to suffer from depression. I would come to church and have to sing these songs about I love you, I can feel you in my life etc. etc. etc. when I didn't feel anything like that. I would have much preferred to sing about who God was because he is unchanging.....not like my emotional state.

And I think that in the end is my greatest worry, that the overuse of us-centred lyrics and the over-emphasis on things like Planetshakers (I am not saying it shouldn't have any emphasis) are breeding Christians that are equating experience with spirituality......who need to 'feel' something, or to be 'touched' in order to validate their relationship with God. Because of the theology that I grew up with, I felt so guilty during the time that I had depression (but was undiagnosed) because I couldn't 'feel' God and I thought that meant there was something wrong with me or I was less spiritual or something like that.

As Earthsuit so delicately put it:
"Youth camp junkies don't get enough to make the buzz last"
-Schizophreniac

Just to balance this out, I should add that when I have been to Planetshakers, I have encountered God in an incredible way, one year my curved spine was healed.....I was just on my own and it was really beautiful - I threw out my insoles (my spine was stuffing my feet up) and have never looked back. To me it felt like God was looking out for me :)

u guys are from melbourne aye?? or brisbane?

u get jurgen alot from your sessions aye!...his good!..wat am i saying they're all good!!!!

----------------------------------------

when you don't feel like worshiping God, is that a reason to 'not' Worship God?? yeah its' true, its not abuot the feelings! or crying!! i used to think that if im not crying then im not Touched by The HOly Spirit!...hahaha...God's touch is not supposed to make us cry! its supposed to gives us peace!...we cry becasue we're overwhelmed BY his touch.

it's just like, when we have so many problems, and we dont feel like worshiping God, shuold we not Worship God? of course we should Worhsip Him!! in every circumstances, God is still GOD! He DESERVES OUR PRAISES!!! becasue it's not about us!

lyrics that says us us us...i think...the reason why the writers wrote that...its becasue of a personal experience. and i knw alot of people experience something similar. Rain down on me, i heard everyone shuoting it with a passion, cause they wanted God to rain down on them!, and God doens't have any problem with that, coz HE WANTS TO!!
