That's OK Rob ... just remembered ... a member of CF told me the same thing, I can pm her and ask her which church it was. I know she was freaked out by it too. I just don't know the church, so am not accusing anyone.

yeah i remember it was pretty full on, i guess if a person didnt understand what it was about then they could get scared/freaked out by it..

G'day All...

Like Tavita I havent pposted on this thread yet because I've been reading it for the past 1/2 hour.... I actually went to one night of Planet shakers while I was in Perth (thursday night for those who were at it)... and I was a little uncertain about some of it... but over all the message was good... It was all about how immediate the return of jesus is... The speaker was quite good, he used some excellent techniques to make his point (eg he asked us to close our eyes and imagine the return ourselves)... at the end of it he did this really weird thing called "burdening", now comming from an Agnlican church I was reasonably wierded out by this, but what they did was ask everyone to close their eyes and empathise with someone they were close to who didn't know jesus... Everyone around me started fully crying and screaming, and after the event there were heaps of people still in tears.... I can however appreciate the validity of such a thing, through empathy, we are brought about to meet the needs of those who dont know jesus more urgently, and go that much further in trying to reach out to them.... Overall I thought the music was Alright, but my tastes in praise songs are a bit different to what they were aiming at.... however there was this one song that I thought went over the line a bit too much: "Everybody jump in the house of god.. Jump jump jump Jump around..... Somebody get your praise on" I guess I just cant see the need to do all that junping around when praising god... but as has been the whole theme for this discussion, what I find unhelpful, can meet the needs of others very well.... I couldn't imagine however bringing a non christian friend to that... My cousin who isn't a christian was there, and I imagine he was thouroughly freaked out... though perhaps the intensity of it can penetrate through barriers people raise up to christianity... so I guess in that way It could be a good move, In any case P?S was good--- It gave me the opportunity to discuss what christianity was about to my cousin....

Wow.. I never thought anyone could say anything bad about Planet Shakers, but I guess everyone has their own opinion. Planet Shakers was an awesome, life changing experience for me. And my favourite part of it was the music! Sure, some of the lyrics were as you said "weird", Rachel.. but the song went on to say "Praise him.. jump, jump" .. still an element of praising God there, while having some fun. The other songs were amazing.. I found the lyrics really touched me. But that's my opinion anyway.. : )

I thought this thread died ages ago...
anyhow. Planetshakers was an awesome experience. It gives young people an opportunity to open their hearts to God, to get as excited about worship and praise as they would about a footy game.

God doesn't require us to be solemn or sombre when we go to church, He requires that we are open and honest and real with Him, if we are angry be angry, sad then cry, happy then laugh, excited? then why not scream and jump around?

God already knows what we are really thinking and what we are really feeling, pretending otherwise is basically lying to God and yourself. Thats what I think anyway.

Moses, Abraham and a guy named Phineas (sp?) all were argumentative with God (they all did something to save other people when God wanted to destroy them!), AND GOD LOVED IT!!

Anyhooo...

This thread is not totally about PLanetshakers anymore... bizarre mentionings of faked miracles, bad experiences, peoples crutches, misquoted scripture, scripture taken out of context, people who have never been to Planetshakers relying on those who have (who are generally old and deeply set in their traditions or young and not terribly eloquent). None of this is really relevant to the topic.

What is Planetshakers?
Planetshakers is the biggest Christian youth conference in the southern hemisphere. It is non-denominational but runs on pentecostal lines. This year there were around 20, 000 full time delegates. Planetshakers conference combines dynamic worship (loud, excited chorus') and preaching by today's premiere Youth ministers. Planetshakers is not exclusive, anyone can attend!

Ministry.
The preaching is biblical, however it is modern and relevant, all preaching is purely Christian there is no manipulation or twisting of scripture. The preachers often use real life experience or sometimes even props to help communicate their messages.
The ministers show an abundance of passion and enthusiasm for the Word of God
and live lives that shine God's love. (and that is good enough proof for me 'you shall know them by their fruits")

Some topics covered include: God's amazing love & forgiveness, our sinful nature, Our need to read our bible and pray, discipleship, worship- what does it mean, how do you worship?, how to impact others for Christ in our communities etc. The focus is on giving a young live a 'tune up' and empowering them (hyping them up even) so they are excited to evangelize in their communities (which is by the way a good thing).

Giving.
All and sundry are given the opportunity to give, there is no compulsion to give only a message showing the biblical principal of giving and receiving. Giving is encouraged (as it should be, it opens up the opportunity for God to bless us as we obey His word)

Hmm... what else do you need to know?

Any questions feel free to ask me via OM or leave them in here somewhere.
I have been to Planetshakers for the last 3 years running so I should be able to answer most questions.

Don't get to deeply theological or to blatantly anti-pentecostal or I wont bother to answer k?

Peace

WOW...

As someone who has been to Planet Shaker Conferences for the past couple of years it sucks to hear that there are people out there who think it is "over the top" and just too "out there"...I can see where you're coming from about praise being reverent and all that but give me a break for bagging the songs just because they aren't your cup of tea!

I am sorry for being a hardnut but I dont know bout you
but the Jesus that I read about was TOTALLY passionate about
His Father and would stop at nothing to ensure that He be
honoured in everything!

The world I live in demands that Christians stand up and REPRESENT...no longer living in timidity but in POWER AND IN TRUTH!!! Shucks, I gota say that
I am just soooo ticked off at the bagging out of the P.S. conference...maybe some of you guys are content to just stay in your four walls and not get "too excited" (God forbid) about giving God praise but please dont try and make other people live within your limits, and especially over little things like some
song lyrics...puhlease!!!!

I thank God that there are conferences like Planet Shakers around...
with the best speakers from around Australia and around the World,
cos every meeting that I go to I get sharpened...and we need sharp
christians around if we want to do what God wants!!!

so please stop hating and start participating!
seriously, God loves the passionate praise of His people!

peace out people

That's true, charis, very true...

HOWEVER... the number of times I have been to PS and YA and the rest of these youth functions, the more I see cliques arising, focussing on being loud and noisy (rather than focus on God - all well and good to worship God loudly, not so good when it's just to 'outdance/outsing/outyell' your mates - which I see more of than worship), and people ridiculing you just because you choose to worship in another form.

I don't like the most pit. Not because I don't like to mosh (I do), but because when I went down there in Christian concerts, it was never about God, and all about showing off to your mates.

I find it sad, and as the more I go, the more I see my perception proven, I tend to steer clear.

Please hear me - I have NOTHING against loud music to worship God with, it's all good, but I have issues when I've been there, and just see it all about 'how great I look worshipping God' rather than actual worship. Showing off to my mates about how great I look worshipping God does nothing for me, and it's just too obvious that over 50% of the people there are focussed on that, rather than God.

Just my observation, from years of going to events such as this...

I'm a teen, and I've got to say I like the music Planetshakers play as well. I agree with mz'tina in that worship is different for each individual. I go to three different churches, and each caters for it's youth differently. One plays a lot of Hillsong United that's fast and upbeat, and it's almost like a concert before Church. The next will play a different CD each week, and we can sing along, talk, think, etc. The last church plays music that everyone likes, it's a bit slower and it gives you more time to think about the lyrics.
I like each different way of worship, as it gives me different ways to praise God - I can give Him all my energy, and can do it differently every week or I can sit quietly and almost meditate.
Smile and God Bless,
Steffi

hey sascha,
I know what you mean but sorry to hear that you think that more people are focused on impressing their friends than God in moshpits.

I've been going to YA rallies and Planet Shaker Conferences for years and I have to say that the moshpit gets more hardout every year but to say that majority of them are not really praising God, I think is abit overboard. Yes its rowdy and yes its over the top at times certainly with people pushing everyone else and the sort, but if you took the time to really look around you would see that there are ALOT of young people who are just trying to give God everything!

I go to a church where our youthgroup is split up with a highschool program and a young adults program and I have to say that while I would love to hang with people my own age, I just love being a highschool leader too much!!! Honestly, I just love teenagers and the fact their passion for God is so raw and just so unrestrained and it constantly makes me strive to be more in love with God and more passionate for His presence!!! Especially when I go to youth with a real complacent attitude, I can't help but be affected by their praise!

I just hope and pray that my lifegroup girls would never stop being crazy about Jesus, especially in their worship! I pray that they would never be too concerned about the way they look that they would tone down and just be one in the crowd! No way!

I guess there will always be some trying to show off no matter what. but i found planetshakers a lot more encouraging cos the same people who were in the praise pit were crying at the alter in the response time giving God everything - its very different to a lot of youth events were the worship is more conservative but as soon as they open the Bible half the youth get up and leave! it happened at a conference i was at in the uk just made me sad but guess at the end of the day its between them and God.

I was apart of the secuirty team for planet shakers in Brisbane, and it went off!

While being down the front in the mosh pit, you saw people crying and repenting before a holy God. I saw alot of people set free of demonic forces that week.

**Now I have the JUMP JUMP song stuck in my head!**

Um on that smilie there, go to your UserCP and down the side, there's "EDIT PROFILE" - click on that, then scroll down to "MOOD". Click on that, pull down the menu and choose what mood you're in. Once you save settings your smilie should change :D

I went to planetshakers on Thursday night in Sydney. It was the opening night for the confrence.
It was very strange to me. It wasnt like anything i thought it would be. Basically it was a concert... with a mosh pit and screaming fans. The music was ok but the lyrics were terrible... with stuff like "somebody get your praise on". When i sing songs to God it is worship to Him not about me jumping around and showing off to my friends.
If you went to planetshakers what did you think??

I think....planetshakers are there to market to the younger generation, and they succeed. Unfortunately many of those kids forget about it by the next day.

I also think it's emotional manipulation. Loud music, jumping around, emotive lyrics and the fact that all your friends are doing it....well of course you are gonna join in :p

**I am not saying loud music etc is always going to be emotionally manipulative in a bad way, but in the case of a one night only concert it could well be**

Ok i havent read the whole thing as it's way to long and cant be bothered.

But i would just like to ask where does it say in the bible that worshipping God has to somber and serious???

I love planet shakers, united live and phenomena they are all conferences where the music is what you would call loud, there are mosh pits and people have fun!

This is what is relevant to alot of young people today.

I couldnt think of anything worse than going to a conference where they played organ music and everyone sat quietly minding there P and Q's.

Just because the worship is loud and people have fun doesnt mean they arent preaching the same message as Jesus did. Im yet to go to any of the above conferences and hear a word that wasnt backed up by the bible.

The message of Jesus is exciting so
why not jump around?
why not cheer?
why not get excited?

There is nothign wrong with jumping around and cheering. No one ever said there was. The problems lies in the fact that a lot of people find they feel peer pressured into doing these things at things like a planetshakers concert. They also become intoxicated by the loud music and vibe on the night. A lot forget about it by the next morning anyway. Especially the new believers.
