I went to planetshakers on Thursday night in Sydney. It was the opening night for the confrence.
It was very strange to me. It wasnt like anything i thought it would be. Basically it was a concert... with a mosh pit and screaming fans. The music was ok but the lyrics were terrible... with stuff like "somebody get your praise on". When i sing songs to God it is worship to Him not about me jumping around and showing off to my friends.
If you went to planetshakers what did you think??

I never been there infact i dont like Sydney its to fast for me.
I like Adelaide it' boring and slow .Hee hee.
Planet Shakers sound very wrong and a snare to catch ppl, i would never go there after what you have said about it.
I think the way you worship is my cup off tea and it works for me.

I must admit that I'm not really into that sort of thing myself. I just find the loud music and all that a bit much.

But some people do like it, and I guess if the message of the gospel is still preached then it's alright. Everyone is different.

some people may go to that who aren't even a Christian and it might be the thing that draws them in.

Thankyou... i was thinking i was the only one thinking this. I was feeling very old and serious but it just felt wrong for me so i sat and just listened to the words and they were terrible. My girlfriends i went with really liked it all.
I would go again but i wouldnt go on the opening night, i would go for the confrences during the day or something.

I think that is the only positive thing i can get out of this experience is that i am sure there were young kids there that need to see that Church isnt about being stiff and straight, it can be fun too... but thats all it showed.

Thank you for sharing that, Racheal :) Hopefully the day conferences will indeed be more spiritually edifying than what you've described to us. I'm not saying that it's a bad thing, but for someone who's looking for something to build their faith and be challenged, it doesn't seem like anything more than going to see Third Day for example.

"lyrics were terrible".

Dear Rachel

My two teenage nieces are "into" planetshakers - could u please let me know what does "terrible" is or which songs have those terrible lyrics. I did listen to two or three songs; it was loud music and all but the lyrics are ok.

Thanks and God Bless

I have been to planetshakers and it is very loud but i think its great and so is the music… who says we have to be quiet and reserved when worshipping God? Yes sometimes it’s nice to relax and pray quietly but what difference does it make how we pray and worship when the intent is the same! Planetshakers is very passionate and it is a bit different, but so are people thus it may not be appealing to all…

I have been to planetshakers twice now and listen to their songs a lot. This year I didn't like their music as much, maybe it was because I'm used to their old stuff. I think they had some good words in their lyrics though - like one of their songs jumping up and down singing "I am not ashamed of the Gospel, of Your name" etc. I think that is really good for us teens because there are many teens that are afraid to let their friends know they're christians.
"Somebody get your praise on" - that song, gosh, there really was a lot of jumping. My legs are still so sore. I can understand how this music wouldn't always be appreciated because at times, I didn't but still, I think it's good how they have gone about their music. It's more relevant to teens of today's music tastes. Jumping up and down for God, it got everyone exicted for God!! That was the awesome part! I've got to admit though, when they put there old, slow and deep song "Rain Down on me" I was quite happy with that!
They have three sermons each day, not including the electives and so each night there IS a sermon. These sermons have AWESOME messages! I came back from planetshakers with 25 pages of notes!
The first night isn't any bigger than all the nights - as far as I can remember. They're all much a like, just different sermons. :)

the praise and worship was amazing im fed up of church being quiet and boring i felt so free to be able to shout and praise God because people shout ofr their football team but God is better than any football team. The lyrics are awesome to - you are my God my life my all and i live for you alone evermore, heaven and earth will shout your praise the wonder of you name ill proclaim evermore.

I actually gave my live to Christ at a Christian concert, so I will not accept the view that they're a bad thing!

However, it is very important that as well as good music, CHRIST IS PREACHED. This was the case at mine (Port City Youth Rally)... it was one of the best sermons I've heard in my life. I also loved the Australian Gospel Music Festival 2003 and really drew closer to God over that weekend, I look forward to this year's. They have all sorts of styles there, from loud, loud, LOUD popular music (I love worshipping in a mosh pit, I must say) to more quite reverent stuff with just a woman and a guitar; and it also had some AWESOME church services and sermons to an entire hill covered with people! I also absolutely adored the Soulframe/Rookie/Scat concert I saw the other month (three Brisbane Christian bands) - it was the best concert musically I've been to, and the message of Christ was wonderfully powerful.

That said, I have heard some famous Christian music where it really seems to be more about the *mood* than anything else. Getting hyped up, rather than actually preaching Jesus. This really annoys me, as it smacks of a wasted opportunity. There's some fantastic stuff out there that doesn't dumb down the message of Christ at all, and ends up being some of the best music, as well as the most meaningful.

OK ... can I ask a question here?
How can a person my age, and older put up with loud, loud LOUD music and alot of jumping around? How could we bear to be with hyped up young people even if they are bringing souls to Jesus? So, the question is, is Planet Shakers for the older people too?
The Church of God on earth is to bring ALL ages to Christ, this includes folk of 80 plus years in wheelchairs if need be, and on walking frames. Would this kind of a church attract them? Would they be able to tolerate the loud music?
The loud speakers? Your honest replies would be appreciated.

well the thing is Bev that planetshakers is aimed at youth, hence it being loud. but my pastor (who is over 50) loves it! and attends every youth concert.. i often see older people there too. it really depends. i think it also depends on what kind of music you like to a degree.. if you like slower hymns etc, then you most likely wont like the music. but for me i love rock music so i like the music they play, because its relevant to me.

Then, it would be aimed for the young then Rob. That would exclude the elderly and infirm, especially if they have hearing problems. The noise at those places is deafening! I went to one Apostolic Meeting, and one was enough with the banging music. It was too much ... I fled to a quiet church. Like, I am a drummer as you know, and I love music, but, I do believe rock music has it's place in a dance hall.
Yeah ... you're all gonna say I'm a fussy duddy, but, a Church of God should be aimed for ALL ages. Not just for the young. I'll say no more about that.
It's all very well to say Planet Shakers Rock and all the rest of it, but, a Church is a place of worship for all ages. Not just for the young. Still, if that grabs the young, it's all good.

well Bev, thing is planetshakers IS a youth conference, not nessecarily a church, it is aimed to equip youth leaders, or people with a passion for youth with skills and knowledge to reach the youth in their communities, PS is not just a concert its alot more..

yes i agree that the church as a whole should be aimed at everyone, but things like youth conferences have their place aswell.
