Hey Guys, I'm new to this site. I am a christian, have been for all my life. I am considering getting a tragus piercing. For those who don't know, that is the U shaped flap of cartilage infront of the ear. I just wanted to get some opinions and find out what everyone thinks. Is it a sin? I don't want to ruin my christian witness, especially since I am going to be working with the youth of my church soon. I appreciate feed back!

Lol, no it is not a sin! It is the piercing that takes the longest to heal though....don't quite understand why other places heal quicker, I think it's something to do with circulation. But tragus piercings are relatively low-key...people are used to seeing ear jewlery ya know? You'll be fine...go for it if you want, it's not like it's permanent!

I won't state an opinion either way as I'm pretty undecided on the issue.

However, I had my tongue pierced when I first started attending church. After having several of the teens (around 13-15) make such a big to do over how "cool" it was AFTER a church service and stating they wanted to have one done then, I removed mine after lecturing them that it wasn't wise. It was hard, yet liberating for me to take it out and let it close up after having it for 5 years. I didn't want to be the one to influence them do something to their bodies they otherwise wouldn't have done.

For myself, I wear only my earrings, which are small.

Search your heart on that one by reading the following

(I Corinthians 10:31) "So whether you eat or drink or whatever you do, do it all for the glory of God"

Will you be getting this piercing after becoming a Christian to glorify God or to go along with the world? That should help you to decide.

I don't see anything wrong with it! I myself have a belly button piercing. I did have it before I accepted Jesus but haven't felt bad about having it since. Although I sometimes wonder why I have it as i don't show it off or anything, it is just there for me. I also have a tattoo which is on my back so it is also not for show. I think it is like StAnselm said it depends on what your motivation is!

You pierced your genitalia? That seems really odd to me, but you are right, I should have used another word so that I don't offend anyone. However, on a side note, what makes one want to pierce ones genitals?

No I know you weren't trying to be offensive, no harm done. It's just a little diamond nothing garish...I guess I just think that I chose to do it was because I didn't see any reason to think of that area as something that would be for lack of a better word repulsive? I didn't see much difference between there and other places...and I liked the fact that it was something private; hardly anyone knows about it. Besides it's not permanent, I can always take it out.

Personally I don't think it's a sin unless your motivation for doing it is sinful or if it involves disobeying parents. I'd suggest finding out what the people in charge of your church - especially the pastor - think about it though since setting an example for the youth is a concern for you. If they're ok with it, then it shouldn't be a problem. But if it's something they've already made up their mind that they don't like, then it would probably be unwise to get it done at this point in time.
