Buddhists consider any profane usage of images of the Buddha as sacrilegious.

And this Philippine coffee shop chain is making scandalous insulting (literally inverted upside down) use of images of the Buddha on their plastic coffee cups.

Because 92% of Philippines are reportedly Christian. Buddhists throughout Southeast Asia are currently enraged and outraged. At Christianity in general.

I wanted to bring this latest development from another corner of his world to this community's awareness. It's a very serious issue over here.

Why are they associating Christians with upside down Buddhas on coffee cups?

92% Of Filipinos are reportedly Christian. So everyone assumes. That the shop owners and their many, many customers...

keep in mind. This is a chain franchise like McDonald's apparently...

Everyone assumes that the owners and or most of their customers are Christians.

@Erik Nelson They're aiming for annihilation from existence. No soul, and an end to suffering. "Anatta" Not the friendliest looking deity.

Thought it was funny, because I was watching a video with the Dalai Lama talking entitled Nagarjuna's middle way. And he was saying something like "there is Atman, soul. Or No Atman, no soul, no self. I don't know you tell me."

Anyway googled the snake guy Nagarjuna on Evil, and a few paragraphs into his text "The tree of Wisdom" he's already talking about selling pupils into prostitution.

The inversion thing is more prevalent with Christianity, upside down crosses, witches and the like.

Reminds me of when Christians in the US were upset that Starbucks had changed their holiday cups to a plain red cup for Christmas.

For people with beliefs in higher planes of existence, these cups seem like some petty things to be upset about.

I'd say there's a difference here, being that the Starbucks cups were clearly not offensive by any metric. At the very least, even if not intentional, the cups of the upside down Buddha head is offensive (again, not that it was on purpose, just that it is). This would be, I think, more like if Starbucks put upside down crucifixes on their cups--that would be legitimately offensive.

I would think that a recall of the Buddha cups, change of design, and apology is all that's really needed by this company here. I doubt the intent was mean spirited, and boils down to a marketing gaff.

This thread had a clean up of off topic posts. The topic is NOT the crusades or for poking at each other as to who is a real Christian or Muslim.
