When I see verses quoted in threads like this I get the sneaky suspicion the poster is refering to the Catholic Church, but let me tell you a story....

About 9 months ago I got a call at my parish from a woman who need some help with her electric bill. She was a single mom with a young, special needs child. As is custom, another parishoner and myself paid this woman a visit to bring her some food and to see what her needs were. During our conversation I came to realize that she had been giving money to three very wealthy, prominent TV evangelists.

The Catholic faithful paid her electric bill that day.

In my state if your electricity gets turned off, you have five days to get it restored or else the landlord has to evict you. It was the Catholic Church that kept that woman and child in their home.

Seven months later, she called again.

We gave her more assistance. This time we also paid her rent.

I can see where you might be coming from when you post verses like this, but from my perspective, it's not the Catholic Church that is devouring widow's houses.

The opposite is true. The charities within the Catholic Church enables a lot of modern day widows and orphans to obtain and to stay in their homes. I'm personally involved in this ministry and see it happen on a daily basis.

In Christ,

Tad

I think this is wonderful!

Without a doubt theres lots of crooks out there devouring the houses of widows and others get deceived of these deceivers. Not all protestants think these men are men of God who devour widows homes anymore then the men in the Catholic churches who took advantage of children sexually.

I advocate not putting our trust in men (Catholic or Protestant). We are to know one another after our fruit. Others are way too trusting of men and because they are (and have been taught to be) concerning those who hold a bible (men of the so called cloth). So... what happens is they now have been taught (through their experience) to be otherwise minded. I guess that (unfortunately) is being taught the hard reality of things which does not nessesarily contradict the truth but confirms the truth of things when it comes to deceivers doing these very things.

Peace

But the charity of Christ is more so.

Ever heard this joke?:
A poor widow with 4 children was heard every day, morning, noon, & night praisin' & prayin' to the lord, much to the annoyance of her know-it-all neighbor.
Thinkin' she was a religious nut-case, he thought he'd have a laugh by pranking her, waiting for just the right opportunity.
Sure enough, a week before the welfare checks were due to be mailed, she was on her front porch, praisin' & prayin', this time for groceries to feed her growing & hungry children.
The neighbor hightailed it down to the grocery store & snuck back with two full bags of steak, potatoes, vegetables, & even some ice cream & candy for the kids. He made sure nobody saw him as he placed the bags on her porch, then slipped over to his own porch to sit, wait & watch.
Here she come, out the door & you should have seen the mixture of awe & delight on her face as she saw those groceries.
Immediately she lept into the air thankin' Jesus & givin' Him glory.
At that, the neighbor himself leapt up laughin' and called out to her,"You foolish woman! It was I who bought those groceries & put them there.
Momentarily dunbfounded, the woman suddenly returned to her leapin' & praisin' saying,"Praise the Lord! He gave me groceries & made the devil pay for 'em!"

It's just a joke.
Don't get suspicious, bre'r.:)

Good morning sunlover,

You got that from my passage?
Why would that be?
(K, i reread it, it's the long robes I think, yeah
I dont care for that fancy dressing, I think everyone
should look "equal" but anyhow, I didnt WRITE the
passage, so it wasnt my idea)

This verse, among others, gets posted a lot in reference to the Catholic priesthood. (or maybe I'm just paranoid)

Nice story about the poor lady, but that shouldn't
be a surprise to you. This is how we are to conduct
business ALL the time isnt it?

Yes it is. My priest preaches that quite a bit.

If someone comes to my home who's in need, I open
the wallet or the pantry. Isn't that a given?
If we deny the least of our brethren
We are denying Christ.
Your story should be a commonplace thing that you see.

Yes, I'd hope so. That kind of generousity is commonplace around my parish. I go to church with some genuine sweethearts.

Anyhow Tad, my question wasnt about Catholics,
it was about exalting men above what they should be.

See it ALL the time, in churches, in restaurants, etc.

When I was an insurance agent, I wore beautiful suits
and fancy jewelry etc to look like someone you can
trust your money with lol.

EVERY door was opened for me, best seats in the
house, bell of the ball etc.

If I went out at night in my jeans, TOTALLY different
treatment, then I was just another person.

THAT's what i was talking about.

The first verse you posted speaks well to that, and that's something I understood well before I became a Christian.

Priestly vestments don't bother me. They have their own function and outside of the mass all the priests I know are modest dressers. I have a great deal of respect for the priesthood. For me they are the fulfillment of God's promise to Jeremiah "that I will give you shepherds" and Jesus's instructions to Peter to "tend my lambs". This doesn't mean that I exalt them, but I do recognize the Catholic priesthood as the successors of the original Apostles and so they definately have my attention.

And it's not because of the fancy clothes.^_^

Alrighty, enuf.

MGby!

Tad

My bible says: "...take hold of every Jew by the edge of his garment......."

Hmmm........

I don't use the Aramic. If the greek is wrong, then the whole NT is in error, and one might as well just chunk it. :)

Revelation 6:16 and They say to the mountains and to the ROCKS/petraiV <4073>, ` Be Falling upon Us, and hide us from the Face of Him who is sitting upon the Throne, and from the Wrath of the Lamb-kin,' [Hosea 10:8 Luke 23:30]

1Cr 10:4 And did all drink the same spiritual drink: for they drank of that spiritual Rock/Petra that followed them: and that Rock /Petra was Christ.

Even if I'd drop the languages altogether and I can see its Christ.

Which is why it is important to understand the true intent of the author of the sacred scripture, so that one will not be lead into error in interpretation.
Jesus did not rename Simon, "small pebble" (petros), but "rock". In Aramaic it was Kepha, which means "rock".

What Jesus said to Simon in Matthew 16:18 was this: ‘You are Kepha, and on this kepha I will build my Church.’

Matthew was using proper grammar. In Greek, nouns take differing gender endings:

Jesus says, in Matthew 16:18, “And I also say to you that you are Peter (petros) and upon this rock (petra) I will build my church; and the gates of Hades shall not overpower it.

Hi. And that is how Rome erred in creating a Papal heirarchy in my view.

If the Roman churche wants to use the aramaic, then it will have to convince the rest of the Christian world to use it. I myself will not use it.

Matt 7:24 `All then any who is hearing the words of Me, these, and is doing them, shall be likened to a wise man who any builds of him the house on the Rock/petran <4073>;.

But His words were writtin to Greek and I won't use the Aramaic just so I can view the pope in it. I will stick to the Greek the Holy Spirit filled writers wrote in.:)

Matthew 8:24 and lo, a great tempest/seismoV <4578> arose in the Sea, so that the boat was being covered by the waves, but He was sleeping,

Reve 16:18 And there were noises and thunderings and lightnings; and there was a great earthquake/seismoV <4578>, such a mighty and great earthquake/seismoV <4578> as had not occurred since men were on the land.

Ummm yes, Peter is the rock. Jesus is also the rock. See, this link:

Hi. remember also that the NT/NC is written in Hebrew/Jewish alleghory and symbolism, especially the book of Revelation.
Peter was an apostle to the First Assembly, The Hebrew Israelites.

Reve 19:20 and the Wild-Beast was taken, and with him the False-Prophet who did the signs before him, in which he led astray those who did receive the mark of the beast, and those who did bow before his image; living they were Cast--the two--to the Lake of the fire, that is burning with brimstone;

Exodus 15:1 Then sang Mosheh and the sons of Yisra'el this song unto YHWH, and they spake saying,--"I will sing to YHWH for He is exalted exalted,--The horse and his rider hath He cast into the Sea. 2 My might and melody is Yah And He became mine salvation/y@shuw'ah.--This is my 'El and I will glorify Him, 'Elohiym of my father and I will set Him on high".
