  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.
  • We hope the site problems here are now solved, however, if you still have any issues, please start a ticket in Contact Us

On a related but more light-hearted note, the phrase "he's 90 years young" grates on me.
Yeah. It is more PC to say "young."
There are a lot of PC word usages that annoy me.

Just thought of another one, punctuation-related: The use of quotation-marks to emphasize a word (or for any reason other than that for which quotation-marks exist).

1) seeing the cardboard TP tube too late.
And why do I seem to be the only person in my house to replace TP and leave a spare?
2) never having milk in the house.
And why am I the only person in my house to buy milk and yet I rarely get to drink it?
3) surge drivers. They will step on the gas to get up to the speed limit and then let off down to 12 mph below the limit only to step on the gas and repeat for the next 10 no passing allowed miles.
And why am I the only driver with the ability to drive 5 over the limit and have a car equipped with cruise control?
4) people not giving me 1 or 2 word or correct answers to basic questions. Example: alarm goes off at 6. Wife set it and she doesn't get up. I ask..."when do you need to get up?"
Answer 1. G (daughter) is already up.
Answer 2. I'm leaving with G.
Answer 3. Just 10 minutes before I leave with G.
Answer 4. We're leaving around 8.

Of course I couldn't bring myself to ask her, "Why set the alarm for 6 when you don't need/want to get up until 7:50?"
I figured by the time I got a remotely coherent answer, I would have had a stroke.
5) not putting anything back in the same place twice. I have a little OCD, I admit. But it's a beautiful thing. I know where my crap is. My wife and kids feel the need to divest themselves of anything anywhere.
I'll find lysol in the fridge, a sock on the table the other on the stairs, the remote...anywhere you can think of except for the coffee table or end table in front of the TV.
I have purchased 2 sets of car keys for my wife's 5 year old car. The keys were on key chains with so much junk they were the size of cantelope. How does this happen?
It's like losing a shoe and not realizing it. HOW?

I'll get back with the next 50 things after I lie down. Blood pressure is jacked up.

People who use "you" to refer to a single person. Use "thou" instead, unless thou wantest to act polite.
People that do not understand word history; and thereby misuse terms.

In this example, not understanding 2 things:

one is the history of "you" vs "thee;" and
the second is that the language has changed a LOT over the last 300 years.

On the first - English used to have 2 sets of 2nd person pronouns. The first was the formal "You." it was used for both singular and plural. The informal or intimate "Thee,Thy,Thine" was only in the singular and was used ONLY with close family members.

The intimate informal word was dropped in most English dialects during the 19th century. Its current use is pretty much confined to religious groups that use King James english.

Just thought of another one, punctuation-related:
The use of the apostrophe ' with an s to indicate a plural. The apostrophe puts the word into a possessive case indicating ownership.

To openly go about splitting infinitives is also not acceptable.
I dunno - I like a good Infinitive Split. Especially with a lot of chocolate sauce.

Its like a Banana Split only a LOT larger .... :)

I do not hear your silent point. I see it's lips moving. I know I haven't gone deaf. Your point must be mute.
That should not be hyphenated.

Glaring grammatical goofs are an admitted peeve of mine. :) And I don't mean slight ones in the course of message boards or other internet communication like that one, but mistakes I wouldn't have made when I was 8...like "rediculous" (a rather ironic one), or confusing "your" with "you're" (etc). I have to wonder how these people made it past 5th grade English.

People that have to litter their speech with expressions such as "cray cray". No adult should be talking like that
Amen. This is far worse than bad grammar as it's purposeful stupidity. Baby talk should only be used when talking to babies...but our society has become insanely immature. People also go on "vacay" and talk to "peeps" and eat "sammiches" and go "ni ni." Beyond nauseating. These people should be dropped off at the nearest day care in diapers with a pacifier in their mouth and put in time out.

I'll also add obsessive throat-clearers, especially at work or church or anywhere that a reasonable level of quiet is expected. We have one now who has no idea how close to death he is. They should be forced to live on a remote island with each other.

That should not be hyphenated.
That is an apostrophe ('), not a hyphen (-). It was grammatically incorrect though.

I find it quite funny, that when correcting someone else, you often make a mistake yourself.

spelling isn't grammar.

spelling isn't grammar.
If you write its as it's, then it is a grammatical error, regardless if you consider it a spelling error as well. It's implies it is. So the original sentence would read: "I see it is lips moving".

In the case of words like your, you're, there, their, its, it's, etc.; using the wrong form would be both a grammatical and spelling error, since it changes the sense of the sentence.
