Hello everyone,

I went to one of my favorite Mexican restaurants today and was just curious of what style of flan that they served. When I asked one of the women said "it's Mexican ", but sounded a little offended perhaps. While the guy ringing me up said "Don't get confused, this is a Mexican restaurant." Perhaps jokingly. I told them that I think that their flan is the best flan. I also explained that, I was just curious since other Mexican restaurants that I have been to have served different kinds of flan such as Spanish, and have also tried Portuguese. I also told them I heard that flan may have originated from Spain, but I would have to look further into that. I believe that cultures are to be celebrated and appreciated. I was only curious and giving my appreciation.

I remember asking the same question a couple years ago to former staff there, but I remember them giving me a much friendlier response. This reminded me of how much more offended people can get today over nothing and how this world is in much more need of prayer. :yellowheart::praying::heartpulse:

Yes, indeed. Americans have become extremely sensitive to pain and go to extreme lengths to avoid it. Why does a family sit down for dinner with all their faces glued to their cell phones? Because it is more comfortable than dealing with family. Our culture propagates fear, children are raised with fear, we seek a vast new array of modern things to comfort us about ourselves. People accepting their lot and moving on are becoming fewer. Ultimately this is because so many have forsaken the love, security, and strength of Christ in their lives, who we need for everything, including our hope, joy, and comfort (and other positive qualities as well, Galatians 5:22-23).

Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of compassion and the God of all comfort, who comforts us in all our troubles, so that we can comfort those in any trouble with the comfort we ourselves have received from God. (2 Corinthians 1:3-4, 1984 NIV)

Oh, I remembered another one. One time I was telling racial Hispanic jokes, just as a joke. A girl next to me seemed to indirectly tell me that I was being racist. I hinted at her saying, gee I didn't know that that you could be racist against your own race. Then she "well you could be" and I responded didn't know that. I felt like she may have realized that I am part Hispanic and just didn't want to admit it. If I looked more Hispanic my guess is she probably wouldn't have said anything. Without Spain, there wouldn't be a Mexico.

I remember a time when my friends and I would say racial jokes for laughs. Those times have unfortunately changed, too. It's like you can't say much anymore, it's like walking on egg shells and it is no fun.

So what was the advice you wanted, again?
How to be humorous, without getting called a racist? The answer is to tell your jokes in the third person, as if someone else were telling them.

Then you have the benefit of having told something to warm people's hearts, but all their indignation at any alleged racism will be directed toward the third person in your story, who you feign is the real source of the joke. You can even side with your listeners against the alleged third person if you like, and shake your head, wag your finger, and appear extremely indignant that such racist jokes still exists in the world.

It admittedly would be easier to tell jokes if people were thicker skinned, but this is the tactic we are forced to use against those who can't handle the direct truth.

Oh. I just don't tell racist jokes. Actually, I've had issues with people who tell blonde jokes. I think making fun of others in that way is just not Christian.. so I stay away from them. I still laugh at some, and then feel rather 'human' afterwards. Case in point: there's a mock up video of the Press secretary and they've done a masterful dubbing job on her and the rude press... making fun of them It's really funny BUT... probably not Christian. (It has one reporter saying she wanted to be fed pickles). Gov Huckabee, a Christian, enjoys it too...

There are some Christian comedians that I disagree with some of their material, so I know I am probably stricter than the average person in that respect.

I used to tell Polish jokes, and prefaced them by saying, I can tell this, I'm (a small part) Polish... but still, while funny to many, they were put downs. I've found that most people have enough people putting them down and need to be uplifted.

Maybe it is the culture within you live that this is the way to talk, jest...but it isn't the rest of the world? I fall into a trap of repaying what is dished out...I don't want that.

I will pray that God gives you a different track to follow, making uplifting really funny jokes instead! May He use your skill and passion that way. :prayer:

I think its the spirit with which the jokes are told. If the intention is to hurt or belittle, obviously, that's not a Christian way to act. But different races, religions, genders - even age-groups, do have little quirks, which can be funny. It's a shame, even unrealistic, to pretend these don't exist.

Well, about the only thing I even think about 'blondes' is this: I find that real blondes aren't the ones with issues, it's those who bleach their brains that do... :( So even that is a putdown. (And yes, I was blonde once.)

But the OP says people don't know how to take a compliment. How do you give a compliment if it's a put down to be funny? I'm still not sure I know what OP wants. ;)
