Lapdogs are cute, but keep in mind that pretty much all of the breeds tend to be yappy. So if you live in a place where a barking dog would annoy a neighbor they might not be a good choice. Also, just because they're little doesn't mean they don't need exercise. Some of the littlest dogs I've worked with have had the most energy for years and years and years into their lives, long after larger breeds have settled down. Be very careful and do your research. Talk to more than just breeders as well who will likely only tell you the good qualities of a breed and leave out little details. Also, please consider adopting from a rescue. If you are set on a particular breed you can go to
www.petfinder.com and search by breed in your area and see if there are dogs available. If you're settled on a low-key lapdog a puppy probably wouldn't fit anyway. Go for an adult dog.
