Pekingese ???

Hello ! I have been wanting a Pekingese puppy for a while now, or maybe a Shih tzu. i have looked upon their general breed information e.g they are independant and don't require much exercise, would anyone recommend these breeds as a lapdog, or any other breed as a lapdog for that matter, thanks

My Grandma had a Pekingese for 14 years and she had ATTITUDE. I thought she was the smartest little dog and I thought she could have been in movies. They are so smart and very content to be with their person. You know they own YOU right?

Lol yup, i know theyre very bossy and independant and think their royalty, thats why im also considering a Shih tzu or another lap dog breed, like one that doesnt need much exercise.

I like Chihuahuas or however you spell it. my cousin has one and that dog is sharp. my cousin was getting my little sis to get her cell phone out of her pocketbook and that dog thought she was stealing it so she growled.

Lapdogs are cute, but keep in mind that pretty much all of the breeds tend to be yappy. So if you live in a place where a barking dog would annoy a neighbor they might not be a good choice. Also, just because they're little doesn't mean they don't need exercise. Some of the littlest dogs I've worked with have had the most energy for years and years and years into their lives, long after larger breeds have settled down. Be very careful and do your research. Talk to more than just breeders as well who will likely only tell you the good qualities of a breed and leave out little details. Also, please consider adopting from a rescue. If you are set on a particular breed you can go to www.petfinder.com and search by breed in your area and see if there are dogs available. If you're settled on a low-key lapdog a puppy probably wouldn't fit anyway. Go for an adult dog.

Yeah im pretty sure i want a low-key and low energy lap dog, thats why i sorta settled on a Pekingese or Shih Tzu. I cant do that petfinder thing because I live in the UK.. but maybe it is a good idea to adopt an older dog.

Pekes and Shih Tzu require a lot of upkeep on their coats. Are you prepared to brush them every day? ... other than that they are very nice dogs. Going for an adult dog is probably smart, but if you get a rescue make sure you are getting one from a reputable rescue organization. I'm sure the UK has them. Make sure it has been tested for disease and behavioral issues. Older dogs can sometimes come with a lot of baggage.

I'm a 100% older dog person. Puppies are cute, but too many people get puppies and ignore the wonderful older dogs. If they are already housetrained, they can be wonderful companions without all the puppy issues.
