I too am a wait and see... Robert had one when he was in the hospital, but a few weeks after he got out we lost it, and he never liked any other passie he was like I was... I apparently had one when I was a baby and lost it at the bowling ally nursery, and never took another

Nope- no artificial nipples for us....unless of course there is some unforseen complication.

I desperately tried to get my oldest to take one and I swear to goodnees - he would literally spti that thing across the room!

After that I decided I didn't want the hassle of alwyas having to have one on hand, to find one in the middle of the night, etc. Two of mine have sucked their fingers, though and found comfort that way.

I want to ask something, and I hope I don't offend anyone, but what is the perpose of a child over the age of one sucking on a passie? Is it just me that finds that a little off?
I'm not sure, but would it be better for a child to use a pacifier opposed to her thumb?

to me one isn't too bad as they are still quite little. Having said that if mine has one i'll try and get rid of it on their birthday or something like that.

My issue with them (and the reason why i was adament my child would not have one, until i saw how well my sister dealt with her children) is seeing a 5 year old with one!

for me it's better to have a pacifier as you can throw it away whereas you can't throw a thumb away.

Also, any dentist will tell you the damage done by a child sucking their thumb once they have teeth.

And someone i went to school with still sucked him thumb at about 10 and the thumb he sucked was was smaller then the one he didn't

although my sister did have a blankie she carried arround with here forever... for all I know she might still have that thing tucked away somewhere at her home :) but I think it fell appart a long time ago... I think my little brother had a blankie too, but his fell apart a lot faster than my sister's

i still have my toy rabbit that i got when i was born and it still sleeps in my bed!!

i think it's easier to get rid of a pacifier when they are too young to know about it. when they are at an age of understand it's become a habit of them

one of the reasons they gave the passie to robert when he was in the hospital was to help him with the sucking reflex, he was a premie, and was feed with a tube for a few weeks... but you would never know that now to look at him.

well it's time for me to get off and start working... another day another dollar and all that jazz:) I'll pop back in when I go to lunch at 3 to say hi :)

i answered OTHER..and here is why!

my son Joey liked his paci but wasnt overly attached to it. I got rid of it when he was 18 mos old and he really didnt even notice..lol.

my son Luke wanted no part of the paci..i tried and tried to give it to him and he had NO interest in it so i finally gave up trying. He used ME as his paci..i am STILL his comfort..he never sucked his thumb, he never had a special blanky or stuffed animal...i dont know..thats just him.

So..i will try to give this next baby a paci..it they want it..great..if they dont..ok great again..lol...i really dont care.

I was very against it before I had my baby but once he came this changed, I allowed him to have a soothie paci but those are the only kind we use. He has an overly strong desire to suck. He was sucking his thumb almost as soon as he came out and as someone else said, you can throw away a paci but you can't throw a thumb away. It hasn't effected breastfeeding for us but that isn't always true with every baby.

So far Noelle isn't taking one. If it would help her sleep on her own once in a while (rather than needing to be in the sling/held/co-slept with ALL the time), I would give her one though.

Natalie (21 mo.) still has her paci. I never thought I would have a child that old with a paci, but it's a big comfort thing for her. I was going to try to wean her from it around 18 mo., but the combination of almost constantly teething (she wants it more then, so I guess it must make her mouth feel better?) and also having a baby sister coming made me decide to hold off. We had her mostly taking it only at nap/bedtime and in the car, but lately she wants it ALL the time. We are pretty lenient about it now. In a few months we will revisit the issue.

I find this wrong, sorry for those of you who still have toddlers still on them. I think my sister is nuts for allowing her nearly 2 year old keep her paci, and not just in the car or bed, but the kid never has it out of her mouth.

That being said, I answered we'll see. When I gave birth to my daughter Christian I told the nurse to put in the file that my daughter was not to have a pasi ever, period end of discussion. The night nurse gave her one and I found out by her coming into my room and informing me that my child who is not to have a pasi "took it like a pro." My daughter was then addicted to the stupid thing until she was 6 months old and threw it across her bedroom. With this one I am again going to request that she not have a pasi, adn will yell and scream if they give her one.
