I sucked my thumb for the longest time, until 1st grade, I think. My parents did everything to try and get me to stop. Finally they took my favorite toy and put it on a high shelf and surprisingly, it worked! But I do worry that my kids will want to suck their thumb. Does a paci encourage or discourage thumb sucking?

We have taught Justin to use one this week, simply because the whole time he was in my belly he sucked his hand and as soon as he was born, the hand (and the thumb that he found!) was in his mouth. If he wants to suck on something, I would rather train him to suck on something I can take from him so that he isn't five and sucking on his hand!!! LOL, it was really funny...I have a picture of him with his hand in his mouth and I can just see him in five years...LOOK MOM! I CAN GET MY WHOLE FIST IN MY MOUTH!!!!

it usually discourages thumb sucking.

I've never heard of using a paci causing problems for b/f.
All the people that i know that used them had no problems with b/f at all.

My other reason for wanting to use one if it's needed is that i am planning on feeding in a rountine and i don't want to be used as a comforter. I'd rather give them the paci and them know that sucking on me is for food

I'm in the "we'll see" camp. I've read that giving baby anything other than mom's nipple before six weeks can cause nipple confusion, so I'll probably try to hold off until then. Hopefully, my breasts can take the comfort nursing thing until then! I'm not opposed to using a pacifier when they're babies and crying and you need to drive, shop, etc. We'll see:cool:

I tried one on Emily after we got her home and she wouldn't have it! Then in a few weeks she loved it and couldn't fall asleep without, she did that for about 2 or 3 weeks..and then she never bothered with them again...she did suck her thumb from the beginning til she was about 6 months old, and now she don't do that either! With any other children, I'm only going to try one if I feel there's nothing else I can do for them...I don't want any of my children to get too attatched to them...I hate it when I see kids that are over a year old with a pacifier in their mouth!

^I've been wondering where you were! How are you doing?

I'll probably try not to use a pacifier with any future children I have unless I absolutly have to to get them to sleep...breaking them from a bottle is so hard, I'd like to not have to break them from a pacifier too.
