  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Pacifier question

In my experience, if you use a bottle (formula or breastmilk) the same type of nipple that you use on your bottles is the type of pacifier the baby will like. But if you breastfeed, you may want to start off with a larger size or size similar to your nipples or it'll be too different for the baby to want to suck on it. Some of the bigger ones though are longer also, so they can gag the baby. It's all a TON of experimentation, IMO. I can't tell you how much money I've spent over the years on pacifiers! LOL Every one of my kids liked a different one.

Then I'd stick with the one she likes. Who cares what the company says? They just want to make more money by selling you several sizes. ;)

The size has nothing to do with how their teeth come in or if they'll need braces if you get the wrong size or anything. It's purely what the baby is comfortable with.

I would make sure that it's not too small for her to choke on. I think that's the problem with some of them (I'm thinking in particular the Nuk orthodontic ones) I have heard stories of babies choking on them.

I have always got the dummies that were the right size to correspond with the age of my children. It's just what I've done. I picked a brand that catered to all different sizes. I think it was Tommee Tippee and stuck with that.

With my boys we did change pacis after 3 months but that's only because the brand we used and he liked had different sizes. I think that if we had a paci that didn't come in different sizes I would try to find a bigger size with the same type of nipple but if I couldn't then I'd continue to use what I have.

I have three kids, two used pacifiers, one did not. We have a brand name called NUK in Canada that I used. When I started out, I didn't even know they had different sized but I was lucky and picked out a brand that had the bigger sizes. Also when I had my first child 8 years ago, they didn't even have the clear plastic nipples for bottles and pacifiers, they were the ugly brown rubber ones. I like the clear one's much better.

I use NUK too. I hope we don't have the choking issue mentioned; but she's not going to take anything else! She loves her NUKs. As a paranoid parent, I like the nipples are made in Germany; they have pretty high standards. I just wish they would make a teething rings.
Nuk is awesome. I love theirs -- all we use!
Haba has some really nice teething rings, 100% wood... JD likes them. Nuk does have some teething rings, but they aren't the soft and squishy kind.. they're the plasticky hard ones... I have two... I do have one that is a "clip together" kind that has a hard side and a soft side... I'll see if I can find a photo of it..

Here's the combi -- you put the top one in the fridge. DS hates that, so I just let him chew on it like it is.. LOL

They have a "learning to brush" toothbrush kit, one that has even a 'guard' so they can't stick it in further and I let him play with it under supervision from time to time.

And the "plasticky" teething rings

They aren't super expensive, but shipping is.. if you can't find it in the states, let me know and I can maybe get a package out through my friend that has a US addy.

Thanks HS, I'm going to have to look around. I'm glad they make them. I'll check out the Haba teethers too; I remember seeing them at one of the local stores here. We've tried the carrot trick, and she liked it. Then, she really started gnawing hard and crying, so I think she was just biting too hard. I think she likes the taste of carrots though. Poor thing, it must just drive those poor kids crazy having to deal with that.

She seems okay (I was scared too :). She can't chew it yet because none of her teeth have actually broken through, so she didn't ingest any of it. She really only took if for a minute or two. Once she actually has teeth through and can shred little peices off, I'll stop. I don't want to go down the choking road.
