  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

It probably differs in place to place. I would imagine somewhere like Greece where the Church is the official state religion, individula tithing isn't as important because the government provides a lot of money (which is actually the people's money anyway.)

Here in the US, where Orthodoxy is one religion amongst thousands, I've always assumed we go the 10% route. However, Philip's answer also makes sense. I've recently gotten a book of essays edited by Anthony Scott called Good and Faithful Servant: Stewardship in the Orthodox Church. It includes essays by the likes of Jaroslav Pelikan, Hilarion Alfeyev, John Chryssavgis, Thomas Hopko, Stanley Harakas, John Erickson, Susan Ashbrook, etc.

I think 10% is the generally accept standard. However, we should not chastize those who can not give 10%. Also, there are those for whom giving 10% is trivial.
