  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

What are the Orthodox Church's stance on Tertullian and Origen?

I know neither one are considered Saints by any Christian Church (with the exception of the Evangelical Church in Germany, which is a Lutheran, and Reformed Union for Origen).

Are their early writings still influential?

Even though I am not Orthodox, I am Catholic, I often see them quoted in many theology books and prayer books.

Thoughts?

Peace and blessings!

Personally, I value these two theologians/believers greatly - they represent very careful articulation of argued/founded beliefs in their days. They lived pre-Nicea, so their views won't fully conform to what the church mostly settled on post 400 AD. I like both (not necessarily agreeing with everything), but also many others in the pre-Nicene era.

Knowing what they believed and why is very helpful and maybe even essential in understanding the development of the church and its theology in those centuries.

Thank you.

I was referring to Eastern Orthodox believers, specifically, but still appreciate your comment, nonetheless.

May God bless you abundantly!
