From the old physical/temporal Levitical Priestly order covenant

To the new spiritual/eternal Priestly Order of Melchizedek covenant

Levitical priestly order is established/begins here:

Lev 8:1-2 God tells Moses; get some anointing oil, vs 6 now wash (full mikveh/baptism) Aaron & his sons with water, vs 7-9 dress them up in Priestly garments, vs 12 put the anointing oil on Aaron's head, to sanctify/set him apart for Priestly duties. Thus, establishing the Levitical Priestly order)
(MY NOTE: Aaron is baptized with water, then, anointed with oil. And becomes mediator between God & the entire Nation, Cohen Gadol/High Priest & Levitical priestly order is established)

Jn 3:34 he whom God hath sent speaketh the words of God: for God ""giveth not the Spirit by measure unto him""
(MY NOTE: Spirit capitalized = Holy Spirit)

Priestly context: John water baptizes Jesus & God from Heaven anoints Jesus with an "unlimited measure" of the Holy Spirit.

At Jesus baptism the physical/worldly Levitical priesthood is retired. Jesus begins his earthly/priestly ministry as mediator between man & God. Jesus dies the earth quaked & the veil (cherubim were embroidered on the veil Ex 26:31) of the Temple is torn in 1/2 (Matt 27:51). Jesus breaks & passes thru the spiritual barrier. Guarded by cherubim angels since man's removal from the Garden. In resurrection power Jesus is established as our eternal/spiritual high Priest after the Order of Melchizedek (Heb 7:3, 7:17)

Additional context:

Lev 16:21 Aaron shall lay both his hands upon the head of the live goat, and confess over him all the iniquities of the children of Israel, and all their transgressions in all their sins, putting them upon the head of the goat, and shall send him away by the hand of a fit man into the wilderness:
(MY NOTE: Once per yr & only the High Priest, could/would: Chose 2 innocent/sinless sacrificial goats, press his hands onto their heads & confess the nations sins. Israels sins were imputed/transferred onto the animals. One was sacrificed on the alter & the other was marched out of the Temple through the city (the people could see their sins being carried away) into the wilderness. (After John baptized Jesus, Jesus went straight into the wilderness)

Heb 7:3 Without father, without mother, without descent, having neither beginning of days, nor end of life; but made like unto the Son of God; abideth a priest continually.
(MY NOTE: The Son of God abides as a priest continually/forever)

Heb 7:17 For he testifieth, Thou art a priest for ever after the order of Melchisedec. (Also see Psalms 110:4)

Jesus is every believer's great High Priest (Heb 4:14). When we accept Christ's sin payment & resurrection. Our High Priest imputes/transfers ALL our sins onto Himself pardoning them ALL (Heb 10:10). He then imputes/transfers His righteousness onto us. And we become the righteous of God in Christ (2 Cor 5:21). Imputed see: Rom 4:8 11, 22, 23, 24, 2 Cor 5:19, Ja2:23, Lev chapter 4.

John the Baptist father, Zacharias, was a Temple Priest (Lk 1:5 & 8). Belonging to the priestly division of Abijah (Lk 1:5 NIV), 8th course rotation to serve 8 days Sabbath to Sabbath. A pure-blooded descent of Aaron on both his mother's & fathers side.(1 Chr 24:10)

Zacharias is in the Temple, at the altar of incense, preforming his Priestly duties. When an angel appears (Lk 1:11). Tells him he will have a son (his wife is to old & barren Lk:7) & that his son (John the Baptist) shall prepare the way for the coming Messiah.

God choose Aaron to be the 1st Levitical High Priest & God choose John the Baptist whom God filled/anointed with the Holy Ghost, even from his mother's womb (Lk 1:15) to be the last Levitical High Priest

Matt 11:9 But what went ye out for to see? A prophet? yea, I say unto you, and more than a prophet.
(MY NOTE: Jesus says; John the Baptist was a prophet & MORE)

Lk 7:26 But what went ye out for to see? A prophet? Yea, I say unto you, and much more than a prophet.
(MY NOTE: Luke tells us, Jesus said; John the Baptist was a prophet & MUCH MORE.)

Here the Lord is instructing Aaron His Chosen High Priest:

Lev 10:9 Do not drink wine nor strong drink, thou, nor thy sons with thee, when ye go into the tabernacle of the congregation, lest ye die: it shall be a statute for ever throughout your generations:
(MY NOTE: Priests of the Levitical order were not to drink wine nor strong drink, throughout their generations)

Here an angel of the Lord is giving Zacharias priestly instructions regarding John the Baptist:

Lk 1:15 For he shall be great in the sight of the Lord, and shall drink neither wine nor strong drink; and he shall be filled with the Holy Ghost, even from his mother's womb.
(MY NOTE: "and shall drink neither wine nor strong drink".)

Jn 1:29 John announces: Behold the Lamb of God that TAKES AWAY (Temple animal sacrifices only COVERED sin for one yr) the sins of the world

A lot happens at Jesus baptism, none of which had anything to do with Jesus repentance or forgiveness of sin. Jesus was SINLESS! (2 Cor 5:21, Heb 4:15, 1 Jn 3:5 1 Pet 1:19, 1 Pet 2:22) & had zero to repent from.

When John the Baptist, God's chosen High Priest lay's his hands on Jesus. He passed/transferred (see Lev 16:20-21) all the sins of humankind onto the LAMB of God. When Jesus comes up: A 2nd voice coming from Heaven (Matt 3:17) gives confirmation & a flying dove = HOLY SPIRIT, falls anointing Jesus. Next Jesus goes straight into the wilderness.

Aaron was anointed with olive oil & water baptized, a requirement for priestly ordination.

Jesus was anointed, from Heaven, with the Holy Spirit & water baptized, at His priestly ordination. AMEN & Amen
