• The General Mental Health Forum is now a Read Only Forum. As we had two large areas making it difficult for many to find, we decided to combine the Mental Health & the Recovery sections of the forum into Mental Health & Recovery as a whole. Physical Health still remains as it's own area within the entire Recovery area.

If you are having struggles, need support in a particular area that you aren't finding a specific recovery area forum, you may find the General Struggles forum a great place to post. Any any that is related to emotions, self-esteem, insomnia, anger, relationship dynamics due to mental health and recovery and other issues that don't fit better in another forum would be examples of topics that might go there.

If you have spiritual issues related to a mental health and recovery issue, please use the Recovery Related Spiritual Advice forum. This forum is designed to be like Christian Advice, only for recovery type of issues. Recovery being like a family in many ways, allows us to support one another together. May you be blessed today and each day.

  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Before I stamp that label on myself, I was never actually diagnosed with this. I have simply noticed that I have some of the traits of those who ARE obsessive compulsive. I just wanted a place where people understand the feelings I get sometimes and can maybe give me advice on how to deal with it.

Like tonight...
I have this overwhelming desire to clean...to get rid of the majority of my junk. I want minimalism...I want as little as possible in my room to make it easier to clean and organize.
I have a tenancy to gain an obsession with something, then when I get a lot of it I want to throw it all away because I don't NEED all of it.
The first time I really noticed this was with shampoo. I bought literally a bottle a week for several months until I had an entire shelf full of shampoo...........that I would never use again.
So I gave it all away.

Then I did that with music. I borrowed all my friends albums....if I liked them AT ALL, I asked to borrow it, popped it in my computer, ripped it.....until I had so much music on my computer I didn't know what to do with it...
Then I went through a religious phase, freaked out one morning, and deleted ALL my music except for my christian bands... (I literally freed up about 25Gigs on my computer...if that gives you an idea of how much it really was)...and there was no way to go back and get them because 1. I cleaned out my trashcan right afterwards so that I COULDNT do that exact thing...and 2. I wouldnt have had that "clean" feeling I get after I do those kinds of things.

I've recently done the same thing with movies. I had a good collection going, until I got 25 movies over christmas....now I've hit the "too much" phase and I'm getting a very strong itch to get rid of a lot of them...like the ones that dont have their own cases that I had to order...because they arent consistent with the ones that do.

I've also done the same thing with makeup, clothes, purses, jewelry, journals...

and I think it's starting with books as well because I've recently purchased about 6 books in the past 2 1/2 weeks.

Right now I just feel very overwhelmed because my room isn't as clean as I'd like it and there's things I don't hardly ever use in here...I feel an itch to get rid of it all.

there's more to talk about, I just really wanted to get this out.

I suppose there could be some OCD involved. A psychiatrist would probably make a better diagnosis than myself. I can relate to your religious feelings though, such as feeling that rock music might be sinful. Consequently I stop listening to it for a little while and such.

If you ever want to talk about it you can feel free to email me.

You sound like you may have mild OCD or the beginning phases of what could turn into it. I have OCD and have always been the type that when I get into something it consumes me and I go way overboard with it. I literally become "obessed" with it. Now, I know there are people who really get into things too and become what some might consider obessed with whatever it is and don't technically have OCD so this might be you too. What diffrentiates me though, is I also have the other stronger symptoms of OCD (obsessive thoughts).

What I would be asking myself if I were you is do I have any of the other symptoms of OCD? Have you seen any of those symptoms in your life ever? Do a Google search on OCD symptoms and then see if you relate to any of the symptoms you find listed. If not, then you may not have OCD but maybe are just a person who really gets into things and becomes a little obsessive with them but not to the point of OCD.

I will pray for you and to find wisdom with this.

Hi Happy Bunnie,

While it seems that OCD can take on many forms, like previous posters stated I get "obsessed" with one thing. I require constant reassurance. For instance, I question my spouse excessively when something rubs me the wrong way. I literally become consumed with it and can think of nothing else. I will also have panic attacks almost all day if I cannot get "reassurance" by asking these questions.

Some people have OCD and are obsessed with unwanted thoughts like "What if I hurt my kids?" "What if I hit someone with my car and don't know it?"

Others will check things relentlessly like faucets, stoves or have other strange rituals that relives their anxiety for a moment. Some people count numbers over and over, some feel they have to say or do something in order for something bad not to happen.

If you feel that something is "just not right" by all means you should talk with your doctor. While it could or could not be OCD, (I would lean toward not but I'm not a doctor) it could be something else. You could have some sort of anxiety that causes you to "hoard" things.

God bless!
