No, they put on trials because defendants have the constitutional right to trial by jury. Prosecutors would rather just take guilty pleas. The DOJ prosecutors have over 250 of those. All of the trials have been the choice of the defendant.

I have had an interest in the US for many decades. Specifically the politics. Thirteen presidents, although Nixon was the one I first one in which I took an interest (but I'm old enough to remember lying in bed wondering if the end was coming during the Cuban crisis). I have been to the States 4 times and the last twice were both for a few months driving many thousands of miles. And my wife and I literally just agreed this morning to get out there again early next year.

So I'm not some spotty faced liberal leftwing neophite who has a bone to pick with America. I love your country. And I've propped up more bars and conversed with more Americans, from NY to the Bay and from Deadwood to Galveston than you could imagine. And hence I love Americans. They are almost always warm hearted and welcoming.

So it was acutely distressing to watch the scenes unfold at the Capitol. It's acutely depressing to see both right and left politicising everything. Where on earth are the reasonable men and women who can get you out of this mess? Where is the attempt to find common ground going to come from? Whatever happened to consensus politics?

I don't understand your country? Well, I don't understand how you could have allowed it to come to this.

Every American I speak with, including myself, is deeply concerned for America no matter what side of politics they are on. The concern is just not strictly due to January 6th, but the cause for concern definitely includes January 6th for almost all (again both sides of the fence).

I'll just note that it's extremely difficult to see oneself as part of the problem. Especially, as has been noticed, when one doesn't think that the problem exists in the first place.
