Not a Padre Pio fan.

So I've been reading up on Padre Pio. I got a handy booklet from those most holy family monastery folks, and I have to say I don't like the guy much. His primary ministry was hearing confessionals, and the way he treated people really turned me off. I can't imagine even Christ Himself being as rude and objectionable as Pio+.

How was Padre Pio so rude and objectionable? How did he treat people badly?

Padre Pio was a better person than I. But I also understand that many people are influenced by this Saint and he earned the title.

If Fr. Pio had character faults, then in the end it was Jesus that made up the difference.

I wouldn't put much faith in the authority of MHFM publications...they don't like Padre Pio because he wasn't a sedevacantist--and they'll twist things to smear anyone who's not.

Here's an example or two of why I'm not a fan:

One day a priest brought a husband and wife to Padre Pio so that he could bless them. Three of their sons were in prison for burglary. Padre Pio said to them:

"I absolutely refuse to bless you! You didn't pull in the reins when your children were growing up, so don't come along now when they are in jail and ask for my blessing."

One woman said she had read immoral books. Padre Pio said: "Have you confessed this before?" "Yes," she replied. "What did your confessor say to you?" Padre Pio asked. "I wasn't to do it anymore," she said. Without saying a word, Padre Pio closed the confessional door in her face and began to hear the next confession.

One woman who came on a long trip to see Padre Pio said to him in confession, "Padre Pio, four years ago I lost my husband and I haven't gone to church since then." Padre Pio replied: "Because you lost your husband, you also lost God? Go away! Go away!" as he quickly closed the door of the confessional.

Things like this, where I believe healing could have been offered, really upsets me about this man.

What you don't know what that is worked. The culture of today in the US and his pre-1960s Italian one was very different. I don't think you could ever employ the same methods today in the US- because it'd drive them out of the Church.

actually I don't think this man's actions impress me all that much either. I don't know enough about Padre Pio (let alone anything) so I am just evaluating him by the quotations you provided.

Italians need a saint to give them a swift kick in the rear from time to time.

I've read on Padre Pio. Yes he was blunt at times but usually it was because of vision or some such.

I'd advise reading up on him before making a solid decision.

He was different but we are unique in our callings & the graces given us.

To be honest Padre Pio is not one of the Saints that I know much about, but I do know this, the man had a gift of reading hearts, perhaps he knew that these comments were what they needed at the time.

Perhaps, in his time people weren't as big of wusses as most people are these days, and they could take truth and do something with it.

Storys from the confessional. The one circumstance a priest is not allowed to defend himself.

Reminds me of a priest in the last diocese hearing confessions at the Cathedral and yelling for people giving their confessions to speak louder and then hollering, "What ?!" After hearing something confessed.

I totally agree.

A lot of people (naturally) read items while putting culture, time, situation aside. Which gives a false impression. I struggle with this myself.

This sort of "rough therapy" would perhaps work with some; but basically it just openley displays the impatience a lot of priests have with confession.

To tell you the truth; I don't think it's their favourite part of the job!
