Here's an example or two of why I'm not a fan:
One day a priest brought a husband and wife to Padre Pio so that he could bless them. Three of their sons were in prison for burglary. Padre Pio said to them:

"I absolutely refuse to bless you! You didn't pull in the reins when your children were growing up, so don't come along now when they are in jail and ask for my blessing."
Quote:
One woman said she had read immoral books. Padre Pio said: "Have you confessed this before?" "Yes," she replied. "What did your confessor say to you?" Padre Pio asked. "I wasn't to do it anymore," she said. Without saying a word, Padre Pio closed the confessional door in her face and began to hear the next confession.
Quote:
One woman who came on a long trip to see Padre Pio said to him in confession, "Padre Pio, four years ago I lost my husband and I haven't gone to church since then." Padre Pio replied: "Because you lost your husband, you also lost God? Go away! Go away!" as he quickly closed the door of the confessional.
Things like this, where I believe healing could have been offered, really upsets me about this man.

I believe that Saints know what they have to say to every person in particular, for the benefit of this person's soul.

Not a fan here either. I just didn't like a lot of the quotes, not just these but the Mary bringing people in the back door one. Also, the whole stigmata and reading hearts I'm not sure it is true. They say the stigmata was gone when he died - people who believe in him believe he was cured at death... I tend to think it just never was real. Read rumors he was a bit of a womanizer and basically told to get in line, some believe that some don't ... I don't know but just one more doubt on the list in his regard.

I also tend to question if the Church is actually infallable in the area of naming people as saints. Seems like a popularity contest and politicized. Not saying those people aren't really in heaven (I tend to think you have to be rather rejectful and work hard to be among the condemned), but not sure this process is always guaranteed to give us people worthy of emulating in our faith. There are a lot of wonderful people of faith who aren't held up like this, people that go unrecognized.

I don't know much about him...but just based on the quotes I think he was too harsh during confession. Sorry.. I just think that since God is forgiving and treats sinners with compassion, priests should too. If they don't, they might actually cause people to leave the church. Just my honest opinion.

That is correct, the good Padre was born on May 25th, that make him a Gemini....
And mine is May 26...so what's the point? :holy:

Those reasons why i am a fan.

Not only because Jesus spoke to him almost daily [as did the Blessed Virgin] but his not so sugar coated reproval put those folks in line...

Did you happen to read the outcome.
They stopped using crutches for thier immorality....and it changed them.

So long as ppl 'approved' of their 'habits' they werent changing...
But when Pio made it clear it wasnt acceptable....they stopped.

Jesus spoke to him frequently....so he must have had the inroads to these things.

What the OP is not telling you is St Pio converted thousands and thousands in his lifetime...

He not only talked to Jesus our Lord frequently, but Jesus apparently did not admonish him...instead the gifts he received increased and the graces.

Ya know if Pio even touiched someone they were healed. If anything, he was very much as harsh as an Apostle was...such as St Paul who didnt dilly dally in making nice to convert.

He said what he meant and he meant what he said...which in fact didnt make ppl reject the Church but instead run to the Church.

St Paul was also a stigmatist, as i showed in your schism thread ;) by what St Chrysostom said.

St Pio had compassion when it was needed [healings] but he also chastised when the time was right.

I only am reading a few of these. To comment on the first post ? He is quite special St Pio. I'm new to this OBOB but I have a book on him,and feel his presence at work. I see cancer alot,in animals. I have a prayer card with a fragment of his glove on..Things have lifted for an animal when asked.

This is one Saint you should read about.

He was a stigmatist for 50 years.
Spoke to the Lord and Mary very often in his chambers.
Could be in 2 places at once.
Could read hearts....and refused to absolve anyone who withheld sins. Until they pentitently confessed.
[He did confessions for about 18 hours a day]
Converted at minimum...70,000 people in a given time.
Was attacked by satan so he would stop...but it didnt deter him.
Could heal a person by just touching them.
Was thanked by souls in purgatory for their release.

And his Masses were always 'standing room left, only'...
And his Masses lasted about 2-3 hours.
He could speak to ppl while he recited his rosary in his left hand.

I could go on, needless to say...he apparently had some powerful graces to convert that many folks. So even if he was harsh...ppl flocked to him and probably avoided purgation.

:crossrc: I highly recommend reading about this Saint. In fact he is one of my favorites.

Adding that so far he is incorruptible, but he remains buried so in more time he will be checked again to see if he maintains incorruptibility.

What WA said is right. Do some further internet searching. I looked him up a while back because of his NAME. My great grandmother used to LOVE this little pizza shop called "Pio's Pizza". So since that is my clearest memory of her, I had to look him up. I was actually impressed.

Sometimes it is important to be harsh. it just depends on the person and the situation.

there were times when he was harsh, there were times when Jesus was harsh as well, when Jesus drove the money lenders out of the Temple I am sure someone was upset and wanted to see a more healing touch being used

Bottomline for me is that I think yes... he deserves to be a Saint.

Saints comes in all varieties. But what makes them a Saint in the firstplace is that they were imperfect people that kept on trudging. He did not exactly have it easy with the Church itself.

Yep, he deserved it as much as anyone can deserve to be named a Saint within the RCC.

I am not saying those quotes are the end all and be all of Father Pio, but I wonder whether it's appropriate to call him a Saint.
The Church declared him one based on their standards, such as proven miracles done through his intercession.

Apparently he could read souls. Perhaps the people he refused to bless or hear their confession was due to the fact that they weren't really sorry.
Exactly. Like I said, it helps to read up on him from beginning to end. It presents a whole different picture than quotes taken out of context.

Well if someone comes to you and says they want to stop looking at porn but they continue to do it what was he supposed to tell her? Or a couple that had three criminals for children? It seems to me an awful lot of people like this in today's day and age what absolution from their part in it, and it's not the way things worked.

You do realize the man whom we base Santa Claus on punched Arius in the face? Sainthood doesn't mean sainthood by the modern liberal.
