The Strong's Concordance is a Hebrew/Greek Dictionary. I use it to reference what I am reading, because the original languages of the bible are more complete languages than our English today. For example, In the Greek language, they have something like 8 words for love. You know who they are talking to, what kind of love it is, etc. So, it helps to go back and see what the original word is, and get a more complete meaning of what you are reading.
And yeah, let your Pastor guide you, but my suggestion for a beginner is a NKJV, then graduate up when you are comfortable. There are also bible that are study bibles. Mine for example will have a footnote of a specific verse, and it will help explain things a little clearer. Sometimes my footnotes help me see things I might not have seen before.
Let me look in my bible, I will get back to you on the women not being priests...
Did I just write a book? (kinda feels like it!)
