How do non-RCs, including the EO/OO feel about the way the RCC elects their Popes using the Cardinals?
And where and when did this tradition start? Thanks

Black smoke rises from the chimney of the Sistine Chapel meaning that cardinals failed to elect a new pope in the first ballot of their secret conclave at the Vatican City.[AFP]

I find it facinating, but I wish I could apply for a permit to Vatican country. Must get my black suit ready just in case I get an offer

I had read somewhere that the producers of this movie were not granted permission to use the Vatican.
Kewl movie!

Catholic League: Vaticans Position on 'Angels and Demons' - International - Catholic Online

“The Vatican has apparently decided on a three track strategy to deal with ‘Angels & Demons’: ban Ron Howard from filming on its grounds; low ball any negative comments before the movie debuts; and slam it for its stereotypical portrayals while conceding its cinematic value.

“Howard was denied access to the Vatican because of his previous exploitation of the Catholic Church in ‘The Da Vinci Code.’

Yes, the ballot is secret. That is why the ballots are burned after they are counted, creating the smoke.

Personally, if the Catholic Church wishes to select its Pope in this manner it is not at all an issue for myself. IMO it beats a hereditary papacy or a papacy in which the Pope anoints his own successor.
Sounds like a plan

As a former "RC" and altarboy, you ought to know as well.
Please do educate us. After all, you must know a sundry amount of aspects regarding the Ancient Church of Rome, for I am sure, that you educated yourself quite well about all her various details, aspects, traditions, and particulars before you removed yourself from the Ancient Roman Church.
I am not a teacher, sorry :p

Quite plainly, since we see the pope as an unnecessary and dangerous position, both doctrinally and practically, the view is that they should return to the original view of him being first in respect, but not in power.

What would it take for Orthodoxs to come under Pope

The Pope would renounce his Roman Catholicism and become Orthodox. There is nothing that would cause the Church as a whole to join with him.

There are such things as uniate churches, which are basically Byzantine Catholic churches and the like, but they are no longer Orthodox.
. . . . Or what would it take for the Pope to come back to the Faith where he is "first among equals"?

Although we share 1000 years, we have also been estranged for another 1000. We are very different. You are closer to Catholicism, as a Protestant, than is the Orthodox Church. Your separation is not as wide.

Love,
Christina

Dear LLOJ,

It is a tradition of some antiquity, so I can see no problem.

The Coptic tradition is based on the way the Apostles chose Judas' successor. When the Synod has three names they are put into a bag and a choice is then made - we believe this is guided by the Holy Spirit. I told you we were a conservative lot:)

peace,

Anglian
Wouldn't you think that by now, the RC mode of this type of election is a bit outdated?

Another thread resurrection?

Or is this one a zombie thread?

Anyway, the smoke colour (white-ish Vs grey/black-ish) is not from ancient times.

It was adopted some time in the past few centuries I think.

I'll check it up ;)

Edit: I found some information on conclaves ... here it is:
1274 AD The Constitution Ubi periculum of the 3rd Ecumenical Council of Lyon, under Gregory X, establishes norms for the death and election of a Pope. It decrees the cloistering of the Cardinals and the secrecy of the Conclave behind a double lock. The Marshal of the Conclave holds the outside key, the Camerlengo the inside key. If an election does not result in three days, the Cardinals are to be have only bread, water and wine.

Second Edit: I found some more...
769 AD Stephen III (IV) sought to restrict the electors of the Pope. Acting through a Roman Synod it was decreed that only cardinal priests and cardinal deacons could be papal electors. At this time in history the cardinals actually held the offices which today are only titular. Thus, the priests and deacons in question were the actual pastors of principal Roman churches and deacons who administered Roman districts. The role of the laity and nobility was restricted to confirming the election.

Third edit: Even earlier signs of election and the emperor seeking to control the elections ...
420 AD Boniface I (418-22) obtains the agreement of Emperor Honorius that in a disputed election (such as his was), both electees would be rejected. The civil authorities would be obliged to recognize a unanimous electee. The interference of Emperor Honorius in the election of Pope Boniface was the first in Church history, but not the last. Likewise, this agreement would not be the last attempt to ensure the freedom of the election and the tranquillity of the passing of papal authority.

Fourth edit: Before 336 AD things seem to be a bit unclear, a little approximate in date and who elected the popes is not entirely clear ...
336 AD Pope Mark establishes the Bishop of Ostia as the principal consecrator of the newly elected Pope. At this time in history the popes typically came from among the priests and deacons of Rome, and thus had to be consecrated a bishop in order to assume office.
