I quite like the Coptic method of selecting - which is by lot - just as the Apostles did.

peace,

Anglian
I like this way as well. Just the same, however, I hold myself to the Ancient Church of Rome's manner of episcopal selection and papal selection.

When was the custom/tradition of sending smoke up a chimney first introduced in Roman Catholicism [it is afterall your Denomination's custom correct?]

As a former "RC" and altarboy, you ought to know as well. Please do educate us. After all, you must know a sundry amount of aspects regarding the Ancient Church of Rome, for I am sure, that you educated yourself quite well about all her various details, aspects, traditions, and particulars before you removed yourself from the Ancient Roman Church.

Interesting choice of words :)

Indeed, a very curious choice of words. Is there a Modern Roman Church in contrast to the Ancient Roman Church?

The Vestal Virgins also tended a fire, therefore signaling the election of a pope with smoke is obviously pagan.

The House of the Vestals, as it remains extant in the Forum is really impressive. They have some great surviving statuary.

How do non-RCs, including the EO/OO feel about the way the RCC elects their Popes using the Cardinals?
And where and when did this tradition start? Thanks

Black smoke rises from the chimney of the Sistine Chapel meaning that cardinals failed to elect a new pope in the first ballot of their secret conclave at the Vatican City.[AFP]

Must be a tough decision, though back in the apostles days it just seems like God was right there saying "set apart for me such and such". Not such luck here in this kind of situation it appears. Maybe someone answered this, I gotta go back and read.

I can only imagine them saying, "well God hath not chosen any of us for this" light the smokestack and lets flip a coin for it ^_^

Not so bad of an idea casting lots is in scripture too right? :p

Well. ...I meant that it's hard to find a positive feeling about what I feel is wrong in the first place. The levitical model of priesthood perpetuating itself isn't normaly a thing to celebrate in my X-Catholic. Post-Protestant opinion.
(I'm self-labeling here)
I'm AM glad they're not using heretics to create the smoke,
