The earliest elections seem to have had all the priests and deacons in Rome as the electors.

The developments seem to be like this.
c.80 AD Cletus (76-88) ordains 25 priests to serve Rome, the earliest extra-biblical ordination known.

c.100 AD Evaristus divided Roman titles among the priests and ordained 7 deacons to assist him.

c.240 AD Fabian divided the Roman See into 7 deaconal regions. The deacons who administered these regions, together with the 7 deacons who were the assistants to the Pope, were the forerunners in office of the Cardinals who have diaconal rank today.

This is weird, mon. What in the world are they sending up black smoke for, and what are they burning? :o
Not sure how they do the black and white smoke thang...
Perhaps a RC can answer that.

Black smoke rises from the chimney of the Sistine Chapel meaning that cardinals failed to elect a new pope in the first ballot of their secret conclave at the Vatican City.[AFP]

My own "preference," is for elections of any and every bishop to be done in the historic and ancient way, which is to have the decision be made by the people (as is still the practice in the other Apostolic churches) rather than by church leaders.
That's not universal practice in Anglicanism - it's never been in the recent Church of England.

wow, no involvement by the people, huh?

Not in the CofE, no.

Some dioceses in Australia elect their bishop - Tom Frane has done an interesting job of describing the problems this causes

Can you direct us to a source for that? Thanks

I can't be sure, but there seems to be confusion that the smoke has something to do with the election itself.

Just to be clear, the smoke is only a signal of what the clergy inside the building decided.
Thanks for that info.

I see the election of the pope as rather silly, a waste of time, and *almost* flies in the face of Yahweh.

I've always been taught that Yahweh chooses people to go into pastoral roles by giving those people the strong desire to become pastors or teachers, who will then train to become a pastor and get ordained.

The thought of electing a pope kind of goes against that, doesn't it? It's like a weird combination of Yahweh's choosing and 'man's' choosing.

But I also happen to believe that it is completely unnecessary to have multiple levels of religious teachers outside of pastor > Yeshua/Yashua/Jesus > Yahweh. We do not need to have someone like the pope because we can go to Yahweh directly if we choose.

I wasn't aware that the Apostles and early church leaders were chosen by democratic election by the laity?! Gee, I must've missed the memo about God's Church having to be a democracy? Perhaps, we ought to inform God that he's been outvoted this time (by the laity)?! :p

The Pope IS elected, you know...and in a convention with all the armtwisting, backroom deals, and politicial coalitions of any American political party's presidential nominating convention.
