The Rains

Shalom all,

When G-d flooded the earth in the days of Noah did it rain for forty days and only forty days. Or after reading the whole story does it lead one to believe that it rained for 150 days before the rains stopped and the waters abated.

In Gen. 7:4 G-d says he will make it rain for forty days and forty nights
Gen 7:4 For yet seven days, and I will cause it to rain upon the earth forty days and forty nights; and every living substance that I have made will I destroy from off the face of the earth.

G-d never says that this is all of the rain that he will bring.

In Gen. 7:6 it tells us Noah’s age was 600 years old
Gen 7:6 And Noah was six hundred years old when the flood of waters was upon the earth.

In Gen. 7:7 it tells us Noah went in to the Ark because of the flood
Gen 7:7 And Noah went in, and his sons, and his wife, and his sons' wives with him, into the ark, because of the waters of the flood.

In Gen. 7:11 it tells us the flood started and Noah’s age at that time.
Gen 7:11 In the six hundredth year of Noah's life, in the second month, the seventeenth day of the month, the same day were all the fountains of the great deep broken up, and the windows of heaven were opened.

Gen 7:10 tells us again that it rains for forty days.
Gen 7:12 And the rain was upon the earth forty days and forty nights.

7:13-it tells us that G-d shut Noah and his Family in and in verse 17-18 it tells us that it continued to rain.
Gen 7:17 And the flood was forty days upon the earth; and the waters increased, and bare up the ark, and it was lift up above the earth.
Gen 7:18 And the waters prevailed, and were increased greatly upon the earth; and the ark went upon the face of the waters.

In 7:11 and 8:4 it tells us that there were 5 months between the start of the flood and the grounding of the Ark.
Gen 7:11 In the six hundredth year of Noah's life, in the second month, the seventeenth day of the month, the same day were all the fountains of the great deep broken up, and the windows of heaven were opened.
Gen 8:4 And the ark rested in the seventh month, on the seventeenth day of the month, upon the mountains of Ararat.

7:24 and 8:1-3 specifies that time was 150 days giving us a calendar of 30 days per month. Notice that in verse 1 and 2 G-d stops the rain after 150 days.
Gen 7:24 And the waters prevailed upon the earth an hundred and fifty days.
Gen 8:1 And God remembered Noah, and every living thing, and all the cattle that was with him in the ark: and God made a wind to pass over the earth, and the waters asswaged;
Gen 8:2 The fountains also of the deep and the windows of heaven were stopped, and the rain from heaven was restrained;
Gen 8:3 And the waters returned from off the earth continually: and after the end of the hundred and fifty days the waters were abated.

Now that we know how many days the rains lasted, we can take that many days and add it to the days that the Ark rested and the time it took to see the top of the mountain which is in 8:4-5 giving us 74 more days.
Gen 8:4 And the ark rested in the seventh month, on the seventeenth day of the month, upon the mountains of Ararat.
Gen 8:5 And the waters decreased continually until the tenth month: in the tenth month, on the first day of the month, were the tops of the mountains seen.

This gives us a total time so far of 224 days that Noah and his family are in the Ark.
150 + 74 = 224

Noah waited another forty days and released the raven
Gen 8:6 And it came to pass at the end of forty days, that Noah opened the window of the ark which he had made:
Gen 8:7 And he sent forth a raven, which went forth to and fro, until the waters were dried up from off the earth.

Now we have a total of 264 days that they are in the Ark
224 + 40 = 264 = the eleventh month, the eleventh day of the month

Now we have to look at Gen 8:8-12 to see that every seven days consecutively Noah sent out a dove three times, giving us 21 more days to add to our total that Noah was in the Ark.
Gen 8:8 Also he sent forth a dove from him, to see if the waters were abated from off the face of the ground;
Gen 8:9 But the dove found no rest for the sole of her foot, and she returned unto him into the ark, for the waters were on the face of the whole earth: then he put forth his hand, and took her, and pulled her in unto him into the ark.
Gen 8:10 And he stayed yet other seven days; and again he sent forth the dove out of the ark;
Gen 8:11 And the dove came in to him in the evening; and, lo, in her mouth was an olive leaf plucked off: so Noah knew that the waters were abated from off the earth.
Gen 8:12 And he stayed yet other seven days; and sent forth the dove; which returned not again unto him any more.
264 + 21 = 285 = the twelve month, second day of the month

New years day 29 days later, the waters began to dry up in 8:13
Gen 8:13 And it came to pass in the six hundredth and first year, in the first month, the first day of the month, the waters were dried up from off the earth: and Noah removed the covering of the ark, and looked, and, behold, the face of the ground was dry.
285 + 29 = 314 days Noah is now in the Ark

Another 57 days for the ground to be completely dried out by the twenty seventh day of the second month in 8:14.
Gen 8:14 And in the second month, on the seven and twentieth day of the month, was the earth dried.
314 + 57 = 371
This gives us a total of 371 days or 12 months 11 days that Noah and his family were in the Ark until G-d let them come out.

Now we take Noah’s age at the start of the flood in 7:11, add to that, when he looked out of the Ark in 8:13 an we see that 314 days have gone by. Add to that the 57 days that it took until the earth was completely dry in 8:14 and we have the same amount of time as when we took it day by day. 371 days or 12 months 11 days

Gen 7:11 In the six hundredth year of Noah's life, in the second month, the seventeenth day of the month, the same day were all the fountains of the great deep broken up, and the windows of heaven were opened.
Gen 8:13 And it came to pass in the six hundredth and first year, in the first month, the first day of the month, the waters were dried up from off the earth: and Noah removed the covering of the ark, and looked, and, behold, the face of the ground was dry.
Gen 8:14 And in the second month, on the seven and twentieth day of the month, was the earth dried.

Dan,
what is your point? You quote the passages of it raining 40 days, then say it rained 150??
With the fountains of the deep (artesian waters) it would only have needed to rain 40 days.
The topography of the earth would have been very different to today.

Shalom Macca,

The point is that not only the fountains of the deep were open for the 150 days but the windows of heaven were also open. It rained for 150 days untill they were stoped.
After the forty days were up it continued to rain. Now maybe some way I am wrong but scripture says that it continued to rain for 150 days.

Gen 7:24 And the waters prevailed upon the earth an hundred and fifty days.
Gen 8:1 And God remembered Noah, and every living thing, and all the cattle that was with him in the ark: and God made a wind to pass over the earth, and the waters asswaged;
Gen 8:2 The fountains also of the deep and the windows of heaven were stopped, and the rain from heaven was restrained;

Strongs 3607 Ot. the meaning of the word can also be withheld, suggesting that it did not rain again for a length of time after the 40 days.
I struggle to see that God would say it will rain for 40 days, then cause it to rain for 150 days. God said it, that settles it.
Blessings on you also.

If you read 8:2 it does say withheld after 150 days as stated in 7:24.
If you reread the scripture on Noah it seems to imply that for forty days G-d was moving all of the animals and Noahs family into the Ark then at the forty day mark he closed up and sealed the Ark. Now after that it continued to rain, and rain it did for 150 days. As you say: God said it, that settles it.

Dan,
I don't want to seem to be playing semantics,but the water prevailed on the earth 150 days, to me means that the earth was covered for 150 days, not that it rained 150 days.
It eained 40 days and the waters of the fountains of the deep covered the earth as well
Gen 7: 4 "For after seven more days, I will send rain on the earth forty days and forty nights" 7: 12 "And the rain fell on the earth for forty days and forty nights."
there is no other mention of rain falling for any more toime than forty days. the waters prevaliling for 150 days does not suggest more rain, but the water not leaving the earth, but covering it to 15 cubits above the highest mountains.
Rain only for 40 days.

Shalom Macca,

Your ignoring what it says in 8:2 where the rains were restrained, and that was after the 150 day mark. There has to be rain for it to be restrained.
If it weren't for that simple fact I would agree with you that the waters only prevailed on the Earth, but G-d held back the rains and it does say that it happened after 150 days.

No! I'm not ignoring 8: 2 at all. The word can also be translated as witheld, different from restrained.

Even if you say that the rain was withheld. It was withheld after 150 days implying that it did rain for that long before G-d did anything to withhold it.Then He stopped, restrained, withheld the RAIN. The key word in 8:2 is Rain.

Shalom Macca,

G-d said it rained for 150 days in 8:2 and then he stoped them. I didn't write the scripture, I quoted it. By the way, I agree that G-d is not a man, and he surely tells no lies.G-d says it rained for forty days, then he locks up Noah and the animals. At that point he does not say that the rains stoped, because he says it doesn't stop until 150 days after he started them, and he does say that.

The versions of Genesis I have carefully read say that it rained 40 days in several places, and that the water prevailed on the earthfor 150 days, nowhere can I find it saying that the rain fell for 150 days.

As it was written, it did rain for forty days and it continued to rain for 110 days more after that, He put the animals in the Ark, closed it up and the rains kept comming. When reading scripture remember there is no scripture and verse in the original doc. so it is all part of the same story. Now read these verses again with that in mind.(Gen 7:24 -8:2)
And the waters prevailed upon the earth an hundred and fifty days.And God remembered Noah, and every living thing, and all the cattle that was with him in the ark: and God made a wind to pass over the earth, and the waters asswaged;The fountains also of the deep and the windows of heaven were stopped, and the rain from heaven was restrained;

The rain was witheld to allow the earth to dry out. It did not rain more than 40 days, no matter how you try to explain that away. God said it would rain for 40 days, He does not miscalculate or lie.
I will argue with you no more. God said it that settles it.

Shalom Macca,

I'm glad you will not argue with me no more. G-d did say it rained for 150 days and you can not change that, no matter how much you refuse to look at scripture as it is written.
From 7:24 -8:2 it plainly says that it rained for 150 days, whether that fits what you want it to say or not. I have heard it refered to in different ways, but you are the first that I have met that has closed his eyes to what scripture says.

By the way G-d did not say it Macca said it and that does not settle it.As I said before it rained for 40 days and if you do not quit reading the scripture at that point you can plainly see that it continues to rain untill 150 days are up. Like it or not that is what scripture says.

G-d Bless,
Dan
