Have you read taking charge of your fertility? If not I HIGHLY suggest you check it out, specially if you plan a trip down TTC road.

Luteal Phase is the time between when you ovulate and the 1st day of your period. A typical luteal phase is 14 days long. My luteal phase is only about 8 days long, thus not long enough for a fertilized egg to implant (implantation typically occurs around 10 days post ovulation... or dpo). A lutal phase defect is when your luteal phase is extremely short. This is typically an indicator of low progesterone. My dr tested my progesterone levels and indeed they were very low.

So I am on a [new] progesterone medication that I take on day 14, through to day 28 of my cycle. If I am not pregnant I stop the progesterone and AF will come. If I am pregnant I continue with the progesterone through my first 12 weeks of pregnancy. Since the baby can't really survive without the high levels of progesterone.

Ah, okay. I have that book....on my shelf, but it is really intimidating to me :sorry: I love to read, but it looks like sometihng I would really have to focus on and I don't get much "focus" time. Do you really have to focus?

Thanks for explaining!

nah - you don't have to focus THAT much - it's a good book (useless to me, but that's a whole 'nother issue).

Yea, Provera is used to induce AF, and progesterone is used to keep you pregnant, or increase luteal phase, or both.

I think the deal is:

[Disclaimer: I'm not a doctor, so just like anyone on the internet, I may be talking about things I don't fully understand.]

Progesterone is a hormone that your body produces naturally. After ovulation, your body should create a surge of progesterone, which nourishes the pregnancy. If you're not pregnant, there's then a dip in progesterone, which induces your period. If you are pregnant, then your progesterone levels should stay high. If you are pregnant, but you don't produce enough progesterone, you're likely to miscarry before you even knew you were pregnant.

As I understand it, SotFB is taking progesterone to increase her luteal phase (her post-ovulation period) so that any fertilized eggs can stick. I take progesterone (probably in a different dosage) to fool my body into thinking it has ovulated so my period will start. No telling when the last time I actually ovulated was. :(

Awesome book!! It's how I found out I'm not ovulating and haven't for at least 2 cycles. My cycles have only been 21 and 20 days long.
Wow that's a REALLY short cycle. So you only go 21 or 20 days between periods?

I think in some cases, it can increase the flow and, potentially, the cramps. I didn't notice much difference, personally.
That's good to know. BC tears me up just about every time, so that is all I have to go by. It makes my cramps ten times worse. Hopefullly this won't be the case :prayer:
