  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Every where I go in nerd culture(gaming, anime, manga, online comics, forums) people seem to be under the impression that Ninjas had some sense of honor. Am I the only person who is irritated by this? Ninjas didn't have any sense of honor. They were scumbag assassins whose loyalty could be bought. I read about one ninja that crawled inside an aristocrats outhouse hole and waited there in the smelly dung and stabbed the guy when he sat down.

So, why do people like to think of ninjas as honorable?

The answer is simple, and it's in one word: Naruto. This popular manga's main characters, Sasuke, Naruto, and Sakura, are 'Good' ninjas. Just becoming ninja after passing thier exams, they've only been on a few missions, and are still learning the basics. What I'm trying to say is, they have thier dreams that they want to pursue. Naruto wants to become Lord Hokage, Sasuke wants to defeat his older brother, and Sakura, whose dream seems selfish at first but later comes to light when we first meet Ino, is to impress Sasuke.

Well, I'll tell you one thing, the people that I'm around *although they still think ninja's are cool* don't really see them as honorable. It's just because they have cool outfits and weapons! that's all! :D :D :D haha

Because Americans got confused about the difference between Samurai, Ronin, Yakuza, and Ninja when films were Japanese films were released into the US. This in turn lead to the confusion of some of the Japanese because some of them knew "The Americans have more money, let's make a movie for them!"

Ninjas were honorable to thier clan, and noone else.

The confusion occurs from bad translation and the misunderstanding from Samurai hiring Ninjas (which did happen), from what I've seen.

Maybe some ninjas were samurais who felt they have lost their honor.

Not likely, ninjas were part of a ninja clan. Loyalty was owed to the clan, but other than that, they were pretty much without honor. Ninjas expelled from thier clan, or ninjas that weren't in a clan to start with weren't trusted by anyone, and were usually killed.

Not taking into account the owners, a Katana, Tachi, or No-Dachi is a better weapon than a Ninja-to. Although, the Ninja-to does make a better tool, overall.

Although the Katana is more useful, they didn't look as neat. Ninjas had throwing stars and knives, and wore those black outfits, and their swords are pretty nice too:cool:

sheesh, its incredible the amount of you who seem to get their information from movies, anime and manga. Since when has a entertainment source been a viable source for historic information and accuracy? anime is renown for its fantasy and reality-bending. Even animes which take place in realistic places are fantasy in nature...

this is the worst thing i've seen on any internet forum...ever. Aside from burns and blatant insults, this is just plain ignorant. To tell the truth, this is what set me off.

I wasn't saying that I was getting my history from a manga. I was saying that's the reason why people think Ninja have honor, is because they watch shows, and/or read mabga about ninja, and they seem to have, if not small, traces of honor.....well, I mean the good guys anyway. I'm sorry I set you off, but I was just saying that Americans, in reading Manga and watching the anime, take the show/manga's words as truth. I'm not saying that 'Oh, whatever happened in Naruto is the truth of ninja'. It's not even set IN Japan (even though it is a group of islands like Japan) dso how would it be true? I wasn't TRYING to be ignorant, I was just saying that could be one of the reasons Americans take ninja for granted.
