great post.BlackLamb said:Who are you that you should find fault with the servant of another? Whether he stands or falls is a matter which concerns his own master. But stand he will; for the Master can give him power to stand.
Romans 14:4
Now I hope Im not out of line here, but theres something Id like to say.
I love metal. And I have lived the past six or so years of my life in sometimes absolute torment, overwhelmed with fear. And it really had nothing to do with the music it I listen to. Do you want to know where the torment came from? Listen closely...
The "Christian" books I had previously filled my mind with, by authors like Rebecca Brown and Bob Larson. By authors who claimed metal was satanic, Catholics were satanic, black was satanic, and unicorns and dragons were satanic. I lived in fear (and still do) that I will do something wrong, displease God, allow demonic torment in my life, and suffer. But most of the suffering is just from misguided fear. It got to the point where I was literally obsessive about doing everything perfect so I wouldn't be condemned. I eventually threw these books out. THOSE were the doorways that allowed torment into my life, not metal but in fact Christian literature. Now, I dont know these authors hearts so I cannot make judgment on them, but because of them I get into bouts of doubt and pain.
Please, if this is how you feel convicted, obey God. But dont waste your time trying to get everyone to agree with you. I enjoy Christian music, but I love secular too. Now, I dont listen to openly anti-Christian bands like Slayer or Manson, but I do like doom metal and such, and I dont suffer from nightmares. I recently made a choice to try to listen to happier music so it helps my moods (sad music does indeed bring you down if youre in a dark place), but sadness is a part of life. Sometimes its just as much a good release, an opportunity for a good cry, as it is a burden. If Christian music is blessing you, thats great! I hope you dont think Im telling you youre wrong. The verse I quoted goes both ways. I cannot tell you what God wants you to do, that is between you and Him. You do what He tells you to do. This just isnt the case for me though. Keep on looking for the Lords guidance, and I hope you continue to feel the presence of Christ in your life.
