The software we use has a limitation - it cannot handle large threads very well. Once a thread reaches above 10,000 replies, the software actually starts to slow down the databse. Once the thread gets larger, the database starts to lock, causing the rest of the server to slow down, and eventually crash.
This is a known deficiency of the software, which the software developers know about. Unfortunately, the nature of database software is that there's really not much one can do to go around it.
Here at CF, I've decided that once a thread reaches 10,000 replies, it should be closed by a moderator. It can still remain in the open but will be READ-ONLY.
A new thread will be started, called "Part 2" which members can post in. When this gets to 10,000 replies, the same will happen - Part 2 will be closed, and Part 3 created. And so on. This way, the software can manage the threads.
We can't close the Emma's Reputating Thread and leave it in the open, as it had reached nearly 60,000 replies (one of the largest threads ever on the internet) and the software can hardly open the thread, let alone split it or allow moderators to remove posts etc.
As such, the whole thread had to be removed from public view.
I know that thread is a special place for members, and I tried to leave it out in the open for as much as possible, but in the end, it was that 1 thread vs. the other half a million threads, and that 1 thread was causing site-wide problems due to its size.
Anyway, I hope members understand.
A thread that reaches 10,000 replies is usually a fellowship thread in any case, and a new thread can easily be started to continue this.
Thank you for understanding.
