There are perhaps people here who have a desire to learn Hebrew. From time to time I post links to the Yahoo self-study Hebrew group. They have groups using Weingreen for Biblical Hebrew and HaYesod for modern Hebrew. A new group is forming using the materials from Berhman House. The group will be using Shlav alef. The book is only $15 plus shipping.

The book does require a knowledge of the alef-bet and some very basic vocabulary. There is a pretest for those who are interested.

An idea occurred to me last evening that persons who aren't quite prepared to start Shlav Alef can use the pretest as a mini-course. It has a list of 150 basic words. One could print the list out and learn those words (only a passive knowledge is required) and then follow a couple lessons behind the main group.

One only learns Hebrew by "doing Hebrew". There are some interesting stories in the book, some adopted from material from Israel. Not only do you learn Hebrew, but you also get a feel for the Jewish/Israeli mindset.

One story that I enjoyed takes the old math brainteaser about dividing 17 camel between three brothers and cast it into the time of the medieval scholar ibn Ezra. It's a cute story especiallyif you like puzzles.

I am going to do what you suggsted and print the word lists. I am still in need of learning the aleph-bet at the moment, and I'm doing that on another site that was mentioned. I don't know why though!
I liked learning languages at school, it's a challenge to learn completely different letter formations, but I still don't know why I want to learn it?
