You know - it always amazes me that Americans make a far bigger 'thing' of St Patrick's day than the Irish in Ireland.
Yes they had a parade in Dublin this afternoon - and I'll bet that other places in Ireland did too but why the craze for the attempts at Irish food ?

It's an American tradition,,, All holidays are accompanied by excessive eating.. If it's an ethnic themed holiday... excessive eating of that ethnicities cuisine (real, or Americanized). Then again, I'm just down the road a ways, from a town where it's more Irish year round, than most places on St. Pat's day! I can walk into some of the local shops, be the only one that doesn't sound like I came from the set of "BallyK". of "The Quiet Man"!
I think also - I don't know about America, but certainly here in Australia - the Irish have a history of being a despised underclass. (You don't have to go that far back in history to find job advertisements saying blatantly "Irish need not apply.") I suspect that part of the fuss about St. Patrick's day is thus tied in to a sense of Irish pride against an "English" majority.
It doesn't excuse the drunkenness and cheap sex, but for people I know here of Irish descent, it's still a day to celebrate that their culture isn't worthless or inferior.
Oh, yeah, there's nothing worth celebrating in that!
Maybe that's what they had at Church on Sunday. We thought they were green doughnuts for the children.
