Need an XP guru

My XP box just up and putzed out on me the other day. All of a sudden, it won't boot. I can get it to go to certain (but random) points in the startup process, but then everything comes to a screeching halt and freezes.

I've tried booting into Safe mode with the same result. I've tried to boot from the XP Pro install CD with the same result. Sometimes it will go as far as the loveley Win XP Pro logo screen, other times, nothing.

Can anyone help me out here?

1) did you change anyting before this happend ?
2) Get A Linux Live CD, to check the Hardware, it may be a memory problem

If Hardware, you will have to fix that first, if the Linux Live CD works witout any problems, you could try to restore a restore point with windows.

Start your computer. Press f12 and you'll come to a diagnostics screen. Run it and post what you get. You should be able to do this even though you have trouble booting. My guess is it's a bad HD.

The only thing I changed with the machine is I hooked it back up. It had been in a closet since my son was born last summer. I'll poke around and see if I can find a Linux Live CD. (I've never used Linux and had no idea it might have something to offer.)

I'll try to run that tonight and will post the results tomorrow. I hope it's the hard drive; that's easy enough to fix. Fortunately I archived my critical data before putting the machine into storage, so I'd just have to lose some time reinstalling software.

Also, in case you misssed it 2 or so years a go, there was a recall of x box machines. They worked fine one day, then wouldnt boot the next. I dont know where to check to see if you have the right modle numbers.

My buddy had one of those machines.... That had to be sent back.

could be your power supply. What's your compooter's specs? sometimes random reboots, freezes, etc. are caused from the PSU. When buying a rig you never wanna go cheap on that item

Its probably the operating system. Your gonna want to reinstall it. Or boot from last known good configuration after you press F12 while its boooting.
