I need to reformat my hard drive. It's just time. The only problem is that I have no idea how to do it. Does anyone have any advice? Maybe point me in the right direction for a tutorial or something. Any advice is appreciated. Thanks gang!

I have a win95, 98, & me floppy that has cd rom support.......but I can direct you to a site to download a bootdisk image with cd-rom support to put on a floppy if you need it......Slotte said:If you're going to install an old version of Windows, then the most difficult part is to make a startup-floppy that has support for CD. I don't know from wich Windows-version onwards that the CD-support is built in
I don't recommend installing XP onto a 98 system without knowing if it will be compatible with the hardware......A more sensible choice would be Windows 2000 Professional because you have a better chance of it working.....Oblivious said:http://www.bootdisk.com should have what you need as far as a boot disk goes.
My $.02 would be to invest the $ and install Win XP. It's a much more stable Operating System and you can boot up off of the CD and reformat and install the software in one shot.
Good luck!![]()
The windows 98 Upgrade and Full cd's will install from the dos prompt, you just need to make sure your boot disk will load cd-rom drivers, as long as it does that you can run the setup from the dos prompt of the boot disk......If you have an upgrade cd and just want to do a full install as long as you have the cd for the version of windows that qualifys as upgradeable to the 98 (as in if you are going from 95 to 98 then you can do a full install of 98, but it will want you to put in the 95 cd just to see that you qualify for the install).....this works with the 98, 98se, and me upgrade cd's....DMX said:A couple of things here:
1. If you are reinstalling Win98, make sure it is not an upgrade CD. I cannot recall if you can run Win98 setup in DOS mode, but as others have suggested, it is worth knowing beforehand if you can boot from your CD-ROM drive.
2. Formatting and reinstalling an operating system is not difficult. If you really do not know what you are doing, why not get a buddy who might know and watch him do it?
Good point. If you go this route run this first http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/pro/howtobuy/upgrading/ You will want to click on the Check Your System Requirements link.doofus125 said:I don't recommend installing XP onto a 98 system without knowing if it will be compatible with the hardware......A more sensible choice would be Windows 2000 Professional because you have a better chance of it working.....
I had a problem with my sound/video out card (all on the same card, HP of course)....XP didn't recognize my Haugepauge Wincast Tv out, but it recognized the sound part of it.....So what I did was I set it up as a dual boot (XP Pro/2k Pro) and I just switch to 2k to play DVD's on the TV and I disabled the video part of the card in XP......Oblivious said:Good point. I have reformatted/upgraded numerous Windows '98 systems to Windows 2000 & Windows XP. The only problem I've ran into thus far was with a soundcard not being compatible, and that was with a Windows 98 to Windows 2000 upgrade...

They may be built the same, but the XP is not compatible with alot of hardware that 2k is........I'd be more willing to say 75% chance of being compatible.....alot of the older pre-built systems from like HP, Compaq, etc have odd pieces of hardware like the PCI card that has both the sound card and the TV out all in one in alot of the PII HP's........It would be much simpler if the cards weren't multi-use cards because XP just doesn't seem to be able to grasp them and when it does it only is able to install half the drivers.......honestly, I do like XP and would say go for it if you have the $200 to waste (rough figure) when it doesn't work for you......Unless you know alot about your system and can find the XP drivers for your sound, modem, networking, video, etc in advance then I wouldn't mess with XP, you have a much better chance that win 2k would be compatible.......Suchness said:XP is based on the same NT kernel as 2000, so from a compatability and driver standpoint(90% of the time), they're the same...
