  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.
  • We hope the site problems here are now solved, however, if you still have any issues, please start a ticket in Contact Us

Okay - what do the Orthodox in America do about Thanksgiving? Especially those of you who are the only Orthodox in the family.

usually we eat, because the reason for the holiday is thanking God for His many blessings, and being with family. just don't overindulge and whatnot.

Yea, the OCA permits eating a traditional Thanksgiving meal (especially when at celebrations with non-Orthodox family) but we are supposed to eat in moderation. They also say to only make enough for the meal (i.e. don't have leftovers for the next two weeks and still break the fast for the duration of those two weeks)

Is Turducken considered traditional :)
I did a turkey wrpped in pig skin for Christmas one year while we were living in Greece. It took forever to find someone who could actually provide me with pig skin. Probably others also had it, but it just never occurred to them that someone might actually want to use something that they just throw in the rubbish. It was the same with trying to make pumpkin soup. As far as most Greeks are concerned, pumpkin is something you feed to pigs. No one considers it as food for human consumption, so it is really hard to find in the markets even though you find them growing everywhere in the countryside. Though they do use it as a filling in pita sometimes.

This is very much what happens for me for Christmas - bearing in mind I'm on the Julian Calendar Christmas day can be a problem.

Since my husband died I've , at their invitation , joined a lovely family who live across the road from me for Christmas Day. I had a few twinges about this the first year and was firmly told off by my GodPapa and reminded that to refuse the goodies put in front of me [ and oh boy can the men in that family cook - they could put some professionals to shame ! ] it would in fact be a greater sin to indicate that because of the Fast I couldn't eat this or that.

This year I'll be enjoying poussins :)

I've wondered about that. Where does one find a one-meal turkey?

It's not a problem for me, at least not now, since I won't be hosting, and my husband can eat it anyway.

I'm glad I'm not hosting. Leftover turkey sandwiches are one of my FAVORITE foods. I'm not sure I could resist if I had a fridge full of it ...

After it's been served you vanish to the kitchen and put the remains into small portions and FREEZE it quickly so you remove the temptation :) Been there , done it etc etc :p
Thanksgiving dinner is my favorite collection of foods. :)

A few years ago I put up plates of frozen dinners - all together (except the cranberry sauce). I just did a few since I wasn't sure how well it would thaw/reheat. It turned out great!

But individual portions is probably even better for longer term.

It was great pulling out a frozen dinner and having it so quick and convenient though! :)

Perhaps a turkey breast instead? Or have some of a whole one and make turkey corn soup and freeze it?

I may have spoken too soon. It may be (depending on who is in town) that my daughter may want a dinner at my home. In that case, I would be pleased to have her and her guests, if we can do so after the dinner I have been invited to.

But she wants me to do the turkey. And she doesn't like turkey leftovers. So yes ... There would have to be a small bird (I used to buy breast only but my husband prefers dark), some leftovers left out for him, and the rest frozen quickly.

That would represent a temptation for me, I'm afraid. And so far I'm doing well. Then again, we are only 7 days in ... Lent was easy in the beginning too ...

And I still don't know how much talk about fasting is appropriate. Forgive me, my brothers and sisters, if I err (and I probably do!).
