  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Name a doctrine that you used to believe in but dont anymore.

I stopped believing that the pulpit was the centre of Christian worship and remembered that Christ's sacrifice is the centre of everything we believe.

If you care to add "present tense" to help you believe your theology, I guess you can. I see it as past tense concerning Christ and future concerning us. If you doubt me, go dig up some graves. Yes I believe in a literal resurrection to come.

How about we read more of the passage?

1 Co 15:12–24

12 Now if Christ is proclaimed as raised from the dead, how can some of you say that there is no resurrection of the dead?
13 But if there is no resurrection of the dead, then not even Christ has been raised.
14 And if Christ has not been raised, then our preaching is in vain and your faith is in vain.
15 We are even found to be misrepresenting God, because we testified about God that he raised Christ, whom he did not raise if it is true that the dead are not raised.
16 For if the dead are not raised, not even Christ has been raised.
17 And if Christ has not been raised, your faith is futile and you are still in your sins.
18 Then those also who have fallen asleep in Christ have perished.
19 If in Christ we have hope in this life only, we are of all people most to be pitied.
20 But in fact Christ has been raised from the dead, the firstfruits of those who have fallen asleep.
21 For as by a man came death, by a man has come also the resurrection of the dead.
22 For as in Adam all die, so also in Christ shall all be made alive.
23 But each in his own order: Christ the firstfruits, then at his coming those who belong to Christ.
24 Then comes the end, when he delivers the kingdom to God the Father after destroying every rule and every authority and power.


Take notice of verse 23.

Paul tells us the order in which the resurrection of the church will take place. First Christ. Then those who belong to Christ. But notice the clause - "at his coming".

Has Jesus come back yet? If not, then no member of the church has been resurrected. The time is still future.

I gave up believing that hearing a preacher explain the faith was the centre of worship.

Some preachers I've heard, with my own ears in their own building, did a good job and tried to explain the passage they chose for their sermon. Some were not so successful at explaining passages but were good hearted decent people. Some preached to raise the level of giving, and I guess the debts of the incorporated entity for that congregation needed higher giving. Some asked for money as they bought very expensive cars for the church. It could be called 'listening to the doctrines of men' I guess.

The Catholic Church offers the following definition of worship in the glossary of the CCC.
WORSHIP: Adoration and honour given to God, which is the first act of the virtue of religion. Public worship is given to God in the Church by the celebration of the Paschal Mystery of Christ in the liturgy.​

Jesus said, God is Spirit, and those who worship him must worship in Spirit and truth.

The worship that God wants is this: caring for orphans or widows who need help and keeping yourself free from the world's evil influence. This is the kind of worship that God accepts as pure and good. (James 1:27)

I gave up believing that I could set the agenda for worship. It is what God asks for that is paramount.
