• The General Mental Health Forum is now a Read Only Forum. As we had two large areas making it difficult for many to find, we decided to combine the Mental Health & the Recovery sections of the forum into Mental Health & Recovery as a whole. Physical Health still remains as it's own area within the entire Recovery area.

If you are having struggles, need support in a particular area that you aren't finding a specific recovery area forum, you may find the General Struggles forum a great place to post. Any any that is related to emotions, self-esteem, insomnia, anger, relationship dynamics due to mental health and recovery and other issues that don't fit better in another forum would be examples of topics that might go there.

If you have spiritual issues related to a mental health and recovery issue, please use the Recovery Related Spiritual Advice forum. This forum is designed to be like Christian Advice, only for recovery type of issues. Recovery being like a family in many ways, allows us to support one another together. May you be blessed today and each day.

I love having Aspergers syndrome. It made my life a living hell in grade schook, but since my case is somewhat mild I have since learned to deal with it in the last couple of years. Ironically, I only really started improving greatly after becoming an atheist. I mean, if I can't help myself who can? I have to make my own happiness. At least that's my outlook.

My best friend is 16 and has this syndrome, but he has the "gifted" case where he remembers exact dates and stuff.
I am curious at what you actaully mean by "gifted" case... I have been told I am gifted all my life... my gift I think has been my creativity... It has helped me develop my own unique "out-of-the-box" coping skills... and has masked my difficulties over the years... I have wondered if this is related to that sevant stuff or not...but have been leary about bringing it up.

HI jennie
My seven year old son has been diagnosed with it and Bipolar A S is a challenge But it can be helped.

I sit around almost every day trying to place a how and a why on it. Did I have it as a kid and never get diagnosed? Do I have it now? Does mental history in my family and wife's family destin my son for the looney bin, ? Difficult questions.
First, family genetics probably play a part. there is a lot of mental illness in my family, but not so much true psychiatric illness as psychological illness....I won't go into details, but the therapy for the first would be meds as it relates to biochemical imbalance, the second, however would be more talk therapy and making life changes.
I had difficulty as a kid that nowadays, like Boltwave, may have earned me a title of Asperger's. I htink I was just more of a "social reject": an outcast, kind of like the untouchable class of India (only I live in America) .....I still am. People avoid me like the plague (which I do not have) it seems and I have little to no friends, why I don't know . but I have priority of taking care of my kid so my energy goes there right now
But do I have A S ? no I think if that were the case someone would have picked up on it by now
(My ex friend says that I was not an outcast, just a rebel anyway)

IF genetics have a play, then why do I have a second sonm who is totally healthy? Why would one get the genetics for bipolar/aspergers and the other one not ???

Most members on my side of the family have straightened themselves out and it did not take meds to do it.

My son requires meds and will have them as long as is needed.

As for the other things Boltwave mentioned, I don't live in a fantasy world, by any means, but I am an artist and I deal in the imaginative/abstract concepts. That is how I think and I think in terms of how my imagination will go to a canvas or sculpture....
I am not obsessive (I observe that in my son and not in mself) As for making firends, well I have none, and that stinks, but anyway....and for doing math, well, how DO you work that calculator ? LOL
Hope this hels clear a few things up

I used to think that way too. It lead to me becoming suicidal and so anxious, when i realised how helpless i really am though. God , however, IS great and mighty- nothing is too hard for Him ! PRAISE HIS NAME ! God brings joy and peace to His people's hearts.
