• The General Mental Health Forum is now a Read Only Forum. As we had two large areas making it difficult for many to find, we decided to combine the Mental Health & the Recovery sections of the forum into Mental Health & Recovery as a whole. Physical Health still remains as it's own area within the entire Recovery area.

If you are having struggles, need support in a particular area that you aren't finding a specific recovery area forum, you may find the General Struggles forum a great place to post. Any any that is related to emotions, self-esteem, insomnia, anger, relationship dynamics due to mental health and recovery and other issues that don't fit better in another forum would be examples of topics that might go there.

If you have spiritual issues related to a mental health and recovery issue, please use the Recovery Related Spiritual Advice forum. This forum is designed to be like Christian Advice, only for recovery type of issues. Recovery being like a family in many ways, allows us to support one another together. May you be blessed today and each day.

I just masturbated an hour ago. I want to stop. I've read the other posts in here about stopping, but am starting this thread because I'm looking for more detailed advice.

Plan:
touch at most once a week.
Once 4 weeks go by, touch at most once a month.
Once 12 months go by, touch at most once a year.

Is this a realistic plan? I'm a 21 year old asian male in Ottawa Canada (in case culture/location plays a part in this).

Try praying to God if you already haven't. I remember when I was young and I first found out about my sexuality. I was 11.5 and would be turning 12 and found out by a mistake. I just knew that this thing felt good but also in the end knew it was wrong. I think that God places this knowledge in us even when we have no idea what we are doing is sin sometimes.

But even then, I prayed to God to stop. I was a child and prayed with the faith of a child and God took the desire away completely. I didn't have a problem again until I was in my 20's and fell into this crap that my friends were saying that it is so natural. I just turned 22.

Ok, so just a few months ago I prayed to God and he gave me this scripture in a dream. It was Romans 12:1 cause I started questioning if it was wrong or not and God gave me the answer.

Try reading your bible and fervently praying when you get these urges.

James 1:12-16 Oh PRAISE GOD FOR THESE VERSES. Hallelujah!

12. Blessed is the man that endureth temptation: for when he is tried, he shall receive the crown of life, which the Lord hath promised to them that love him. 13. Let no man say when he is tempted, I am tempted of God: for God cannot be tempted with evil, neither tempteth he any man: 14. But every man is tempted, when he is drawn away of his own lust, and enticed. 15. Then when lust hath conceived it bringeth forth death. 16. Do not err, my beloved brethren.

in 1 Corinthians 6: 18-20

18. Flee fornication. Every sin that a man doeth is without the body; but he that committeth fornication sinneth against his own body. 19. What? know ye not that your body is the temple of the Holy Ghost which is in you, which ye have of God, and ye are not your own? 20. For ye are bought with a price therefore glorify God in your body, and in your spirit, which are God's.

that got erased! I hate when that happens.

But anyway, how about praying and reading scripture when your temptation comes about. It really does work!

And you have to go about renewing your mind. It isn't easy but you can ask God for help. I do many times. God gave me this scripture in a dream once, Romans 12: 1-2 I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that ye present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable unto God, which is your reasonable service. 2 And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God.

This was because I questioned whether what you are speaking of is wrong or not. In today's age, many of your friends and people are telling you it is perfectly natural but the holy spirit is saying something different.

If you are watching pornography, or doing anything that leads to lustful thoughts, then you need to stop. It only makes the renewing of your mind much more diffucult.

I try to make a habit to read these verses every so often, at least a few times a week to keep my flesh in check.

Now, with renewing your mind, you should remember Romans 12:1-2.

When you start to get lustful thoughts, you will fight with them in your mind. Sometimes you will go on for three minutes or even more, but then you will remember that they are wrong. Then, you will have to fight and repeat this scripture to yourself.

It says in Romans 12:1 that this is "your reasonable service." You know what reasonable means? It means this is the least you are expected to do as a servant of God. The least you are to do is present your bodies as a living sacrafice, holy and acceptable.

Many times, I often say, "No, this is wrong. God doesn;t want me to think this way. Stop it." I repeat the scripture in my head and then think about good things. I think of God's goodness many times and how it is a privelege to be his servant and how I should do what he wants me to and what is ultimately right.

that helps too.

Nothing wrong with having a plan. But getting your sex drive to synchronise with it may be a bit difficult.

The sexual tension should help me study better in school (hopefully).
Haven't masturbated since posting the thread (2 days so far).

Is the plan realistic tho?

4 days into it, I masturbated :(
Aiming for no masturbation for at least 7 days from now. Despite this small setback, I still resolve to get this part of my life handled.

I don't know how realistic it is because I don't know you. Nor can either of us assess just how you will feel when you go up the next step. Try, see what happens, but don't think it is the end of the world if it doesn't quite work out as planned.
