Affirmative ... and two posters made me feel better about changing my mind.

Well, you shouldn't feel better. This one's not even original. Not exactly a glorious comeback.

If you believe that the universe has always been running under the same set of laws, I challenge you to describe to me a hypothetical planet in existence today where people routinely live to be 600-900 years old, and tell me how they live that long under current conditions.
Why would it be tuff to envision a world where people live longer than we do on average? They live that long because their bodies ability to repair itself last longer than ours does. But lets not fool around, you are changing the laws of physics in an attempt to justify the Bibles exaggerated claims. For effect stories tended to get spun a little bit when retold.

If it is indeed hypothetical then the Solarians Solaria - Wikipedia should fit the bill.

Okay.

First part of challenge met.

Now tell me how they can live that long under current conditions?
The used a lot of genetic engineering to increase the ability of their bodies to not wear out as quick.

Interesting.

Genetic engineering to effect longevity.

Sounds like a final solution to this challenge, doesn't it? ;)

Nah... a final solution would be the exclusion, expulsion, and eventual extermination of those who didn't measure up.... genetically speaking. That idea has Biblical precedence, but it's not what's being referred to here.

Could we leave the Bible out of this please?

Except the female virgin children, Moses said solders could keep them for themselves.

The claims of the Bible are the basis for this entire discussion.

But on this hypothetical planet, if one group of people had been predicted to receive an incarnate deity, subsequently getting a LOT of flack about the claim from surrounding cultures, they might also be tempted to exaggerate their entire history for purposes of keeping the faith alive. And those other "Gentile dog" cultures might smell a rat going forward.

I wasn't even thinking war prizes... I was thinking more about who was or wasn't allowed to approach the altar.

The Hebrews believed (as many ancient cultures did) that a body that was in some way defective could only house a soul that was equally misshapen... and/or that the deformity was the result of divine punishment.

I agree with you, crossnote; but for the purpose of this thread, I'd like to leave the Bible out of it and call some bluffs.

For the purposes of this thread:
  1. uniformitarianism rules
  2. nature did everything
  3. no miracles, no magic
  4. just plain science and nature
And I submit that, under those conditions, it can't even be hypothetically demonstrated ... let alone tested.
right, just as the rest of history would have to be disposed of.

no need for too many hypotheticals; we have animals on this planet with long lifespans... and the turritopsis nutricula jellyfish is, for all intents and purposes, immortal.

10 animals that live the longest

Turritopsis dohrnii - Wikipedia

If we took what we already knew about these creatures and applied them to the "people" on your hypothetical planet, while they would be very different from "people" on this one, they could, hypothetically, routinely live within (and perhaps even beyond, if you don't mind jellyfish-men) the range you've described.

I do mind.

I'm talking about hyoo mun bee yings.

I believe I even used the term "earth-like" in describing this other planet that so far, hasn't been given a name.

Homo medusozoa can take a hike.

Given that trees can live to be 1,000 years old, I suppose that, on some planet somewhere, there might be organisms with nervous systems iving to be that old. Not Earth, of course.

Oh, and I thought you said that you had done with your challenge threads. That resolution didn't last long, did it?
