  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Reword the following sentence so scientists won't misinterpret it:

The sun dropped below the horizon.
k "The sun dropped below the horizon" there we go, it's not exactly what happens but anyone can understand what you mean by it. so? did i do it right?

I wish I could say YES.

You certainly did a good job in my eyes.

From my point of view standing on the earth, the sun dropped below the horizon.
Sounds geocentric, doesn't it?

Also sounds like the earth may be rotating too, doesn't it?

Take it up with the geocentrists on this board.

You and the TEs are both happy to interpret it as metaphorical of the Earth's rotation. Maybe now you can see how the TEs feel when you say that only 6000 years of events have occurred (I think that phrasing lines up with your embedded time idea).

This thread is aimed mostly at those who interpret this passage ...

Joshua 10:13 And the sun stood still, and the moon stayed, until the people had avenged themselves upon their enemies. Is not this written in the book of Jasher? So the sun stood still in the midst of heaven, and hasted not to go down about a whole day.

... as the Bible teaching geocentrism.

I'd like to see this challenge met, but the accusers are suddenly waxing silent.

John 8:10 When Jesus had lifted up himself, and saw none but the woman, he said unto her, Woman, where are those thine accusers? hath no man condemned thee?

Wouldn't a strictly literal reading of that fragment imply that movement of the sun normally provided day and night?

(Just a note, I'm not a Christian, but I don't see this reference as a particular good attack on the bible. Obviously the rest of the world world have noticed if a day suddenly didn't end, but surely God could have warped time and space just for that battle field without difficult).

Its a "geocentric" point of view, yes. I've said before, that taken alone the passage concerning Joshua and the sun does not indicate a geocentric model. The creation of the earth, moon and sun as described in GEN, however, does. God would know better... wouldn't he?

Also sounds like the earth may be rotating too, doesn't it?
Sorry, I don't see that inference. Why do you say it does? Only with our modern scientific understanding of our solar system would you say that.

As I have said before, I believe God created the earth first, then built the universe around it.

Where the earth is in relation to the universe doesn't matter.

It could be in the center of the universe, or close to the edge.

In other words, the earth is "geoprominent," not "geocentric."

Not at all. Not without prior knowledge that the earth actually rotates, which people in biblical times had no idea that it did.
