  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

This is my morality and I believe it to be the highest and purest and how people should live their lives.

Altruism.

No sexual intercourse outside of impregnation.

No participation in commerce.

No personal desire or ambition of wealth or power.

These are four core principles, there is much more.

I wonder if anyone has advice how to cope with the immoral nature of the world as it is? Everything I see know and hear on a daily basis contradicts my level of morality.

Violence, sex, greed, suffering, lack of compassion and so much more.

I can't live happily knowing the world is so far removed from what it could be and from my moral standards.

I'm sure some here have this problem.

Cool. It is good for one to know his/her values and beliefs and follow them. I wish you luck.

as for the "how people should live their lives" thing, well, you might think you have an idea what is best for everyone but bear in mind not everyone will feel the same as you and dont share your life view.

but good luck with your personal philosophy. :)

Is this based on something, or did you make it up?

Altruism.

so far so good

No sexual intercourse outside of impregnation.

Why? You some sort of pseudo-Buddhist, i.e. get rid of all desire? Embittered loner? Misogynist?

No participation in commerce.

Comrade Teen Marxist, why is commerce inherently evil?

No personal desire or ambition of wealth or power.

Why is power and especially wealth inherently wrong? No, being wealthy does not necessarily mean your industry is oiled by the blood of the workers.

What exactly is wrong with someone taking charge (power) and making himself wealthy?

These are four core principles, there is much more
.

"No sex without intent to knock up" is an odd core principle somehow

I wonder if anyone has advice how to cope with the immoral nature of the world as it is? Everything I see know and hear on a daily basis contradicts my level of morality.

Go fly a kite.

In case I misunstood you, there's the Socratic/Stoic method; only worry about whats in your control i.e not the actions of others.

Epictetus's enchiridion said:
Some things are in our control and others not. Things in our control are opinion, pursuit, desire, aversion, and, in a word, whatever are our own actions. Things not in our control are body, property, reputation, command, and, in one word, whatever are not our own actions.

The things in our control are by nature free, unrestrained, unhindered; but those not in our control are weak, slavish, restrained, belonging to others. Remember, then, that if you suppose that things which are slavish by nature are also free, and that what belongs to others is your own, then you will be hindered. You will lament, you will be disturbed, and you will find fault both with gods and men. But if you suppose that only to be your own which is your own, and what belongs to others such as it really is, then no one will ever compel you or restrain you. Further, you will find fault with no one or accuse no one. You will do nothing against your will. No one will hurt you, you will have no enemies, and you not be harmed.

Aiming therefore at such great things, remember that you must not allow yourself to be carried, even with a slight tendency, towards the attainment of lesser things. Instead, you must entirely quit some things and for the present postpone the rest. But if you would both have these great things, along with power and riches, then you will not gain even the latter, because you aim at the former too: but you will absolutely fail of the former, by which alone happiness and freedom are achieved.

Work, therefore to be able to say to every harsh appearance, "You are but an appearance, and not absolutely the thing you appear to be." And then examine it by those rules which you have, and first, and chiefly, by this: whether it concerns the things which are in our own control, or those which are not; and, if it concerns anything not in our control, be prepared to say that it is nothing to you.

I can't live happily knowing the world is so far removed from what it could be and from my moral standards.
You already seem to be handling this with a martyr complex. Don't worry, eventually you'll become too misanthropic to care people are immoral.

This is my morality and I believe it to be the highest and purest and how people should live their lives.

Or how about this is how you feel you should live your life and not worry about what others are up to?

Altruism.

There is nothing wrong with altruism, in and of itself; however, in practice it is often exercised with ulterior motives, i.e., "look at me and all of the nice things I've done for others!"

No sexual intercourse outside of impregnation.

And this means? No pre-marital sex? Total celibacy for infertile people? Sex with the intentions of procreating? Only having intercourse with your wife if she is at her fertile peak? Never having intercourse again once you have passed childbearing years (Menopause)?

No participation in commerce.

And yet you have internet access?

No personal desire or ambition of wealth or power.

What about ambition to work hard and make money to sustain the basic neccessities in life?

These are four core principles, there is much more.

I wonder if anyone has advice how to cope with the immoral nature of the world as it is? Everything I see know and hear on a daily basis contradicts my level of morality.

Perhaps you should focus on honing your moral accomplishment and not worry about what other people are doing. If you're constantly looking around you to see if people are living up to your unrealistic standards, you'll only be left disappointed.

Violence, sex, greed, suffering, lack of compassion and so much more.

I can't live happily knowing the world is so far removed from what it could be and from my moral standards.

I'm sure some here have this problem.

I say just live your life the way it pleases you. If you find peace living by your core prinicples, as outlined above, then revel in that, but don't expect others to join you as your morals may not make others happy.

And Kat, never mind this thread isn't being taken in the right context my other threads are more to the point, I'm just trying to spread my message.

Aye, I have gone through your post history and I see what you mean by "my other threads are more to the point". Basically you liken marriage to genocide and yet you say sex should only be for impregnation. So you feel it is moral to impregnate women out of wedlock? Or should we not really take your posts seriously as all of this seems far too outlandish to not be some sort of deliberate spoof on Christian beliefs.

Then you might try to persuade others that your moral outlook is the best one by telling them why, not telling us that everyone else needs to change.

Doing the first is evagelism; doing the second is just scary, and is going to make just about everyone not want to have anything to do with you.

If that is how you wish to live your life, then more power to you. But do you believe that all of us should follow your example?

If everybody refused to participate in commerce (ie: trade), and nobody had the desire for wealth and influence, then most people would suffer. Why? Because that would severely limit the engine that powers economic, technological and medical advancement. Also, most people aren't smart or fit enough to know how to make everything for themself. As there wouldn't be consumer goods, they'd be left high and dry.

Morals are interpersonal for a reason, consider just being happy enough with being able to stick to your own before someone condems you as being a bigot.

Elvis because I see the world and I see that it is not right.

I understand that part, but you do realize that many people have other views about what is right and wrong. Some people thing tattoos are wrong, should they try to stop tattoos world wide, or just not get any themselves? I think your feelings and choices are right, for you. My question, and it's sincere, is what is it that makes your morals better than anyone else's? Short of God showing up and telling me what I believe is wrong, I can't see anyone telling me what is moral or not, nor should I tell you.

Your heart is in the right place but do you think you are the only one with the cure?

The Dalai Lama, Gandhi, Al Gore, The Pope, etc have no idea what they are talking about and your suggestions are above theirs?

Altruism.

No sexual intercourse outside of impregnation.

No participation in commerce.

No personal desire or ambition of wealth or power.

I think I take the opposite ethical position on each of these. Principled egoism -- sexual intercourse as a joy in itself -- honest, peaceful, and productive commerce as a morally noble activity -- and nothing wrong per se with the wise and just pursuit of either wealth or power (as means, not as ends-in-themselves).

I wonder if anyone has advice how to cope with the immoral nature of the world as it is? Everything I see know and hear on a daily basis contradicts my level of morality.

I feel the same way, though from a vastly different ethical perspective.

I can't live happily knowing the world is so far removed from what it could be and from my moral standards.

Yes, I do. However, I can and do live happily. The trick is to understand that what really matters in life is how one lives one's own life, not how other people live. But this may be difficult for a collectivist to grasp. Good luck, though.

I will Kopilo and thank you.

Elvis I understand morality is subjective and I may be wrong but as I said I do believe my morality is the highest. That on this planet we are here to do no more than care for all other species using our power and our means.

That is why pursuit of wealth and such is immoral to me.

CuriosArtis with no commerce things could be produced for the sake of producing them, and people could trade with eachother based on what is required and with nothing demanded in return.

Eudamonist I disagree we should live for ourselves.

As non humans exist there must be a reason why, before us they suffered in their struggles to stay alive battling eachother, life warring with itself and now the human race is here with immense intelligence and power.

My morality is that we should live for all life and that everything which is commonplace today, be it sex, violence, commerce, marriage is wrong and is immoral.

Our race was not put here for the purpose of pleasing ourselves through these means.

Kat I mean sex to have a child and not outside of that.

You are free to disagree with me. Good luck with not living for yourself.

I personally adhere to a kind of social individualism in which living for yourself (i.e. flourishing as a human individual) requires mutually beneficial relationships with others, and thus is not the cardboard cutout egoism you might imagine.

Our race was not put here for the purpose of pleasing ourselves through these means.

I agree in that I think that pleasure by itself would be a poor justification for such values. I'm not an advocate of hedonism.
