  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

You buy an LP and bring it home and play it on your phonograph.*

It's in pristine condition, but you accidentally scratch it with the phonograph** needle.

Now every time you play it, it sounds like it's been scratched or something.

Later, the LP is restored so brilliantly, it is better than when you bought it.

Bill looks at it and says it was never scratched in the first place.

Here's my challenge:

Is Bill wrong?

** victrola to the silent generation

This is basically a rehashing of the Ship of Theseus thought experiment.
Kinda, but not quite.

If I had a bicycle that I loved and called it "Red" ... if over time each part is eventually replaced -- the seat, later the handle bars, later the pedals, etc., until every single part is replaced ... is it still "Red"?

Now that's definitely the Ship of Theseus experiment.

I suppose I could call it "Old Red" now, but still, I don't think the bicycle would be the same.

HOWEVER, don't we molt and get new cells every [whenever]?

How about a red head called "Red"....who is now old and has gray hair. Should they be called Gray?

Not technically the same. The Ship of Theseus argument is about COMPLETELY replacing all the parts of the ship and wondering if you can call it the same ship.
Human bodies regrow new cells, new hair, etc, because that's a natural thing for us.

You're smart.....or is it intelligent?

So answer this:

I go to Vegas with 10 dollars.
I win 100,000 dollars.
Instead of guitting , I keep playing and lose everything.....

You know the rest....
So?

lol, I encountered this very situation in real life. I came to know a middle-aged man named Dan, but everyone called him Rusty. One day I asked him why his nickname was Rusty. He said it was because he used to have rust colored hair. But his hair was gray when I met him.

As to the thought experiment, I think it can be answered by any antique enthusiasts, whether it be antique cars, guitars, furniture, whatever. You will not get top dollar for an antique which has been "modified". People perceive the complete original thing as the original "thing", and I think that's logically accurate.

But I think the exception would be humans, because we are souls. When Oscar Pistorius gets two new legs, he is still Oscar Pistorius, and forever will be (for better or worse).

Excellent point about original equipment vs the soul!

Sounds like we get new names in heaven..

Rev 3:12 The one who conquers, I will make him a pillar in the temple of my God. Never shall he go out of it, and I will write on him the name of my God, and the name of the city of my God, the new Jerusalem, which comes down from my God out of heaven, and my own new name.

Rev 2:17 He who has an ear, let him hear what the Spirit says to the churches. To the one who conquers I will give some of the hidden manna, and I will give him a white stone, with a new name written on the stone that no one knows except the one who receives it.’

I hope Bruce Jenner is saved.

Imagine, that brainiac is going to have to go through all eternity with a male name.
