..... and he laughed and said they accept evolution by faith, just as we accept creation by faith.

Clearly, he doesn't know overly much about evolutionary biology, and, like all good creationists, he probably takes good care not to acquaint himself with it.

How is it he is a successful ophthalmologist without believing in evolution?

I was leaving from my appointment yesterday, and I told him I debate evolutionists who tell me I'm a hypocrite for coming here, and he laughed and said they accept evolution by faith, just as we accept creation by faith.
Sadly your doctor is merely ignorant when it comes to the sciences.

I'll keep that in mind the next time I see a geologist (or any other professional) telling me a thumper truck won't start, or a lever won't pull, or a button won't push, or a knob won't turn, because the operator is a creationist.

Amateurs built the Ark, professionals built the Desná Dam.

Because you don't need to accept evolution to be a good ophthalmologist.
So what do you have to accept evolution to be good at?

(Be specific please.)

Foolish arguments only make you look like a fool. But then, you don't have any valid arguments, you don't appear to mind how bad you make yourself look.

When he was arguing with me, I think we had reached the point where a robot could self replicate, and, in doing so, have some kind of inheritable mutations. With a population of robots, selection pressures could then lead to evolution.

The chances of such a robot ever being constructed are, I should think, pretty remote.

Exactly. A self-replicating robot is probably impossible, but it depends on how we define robot.

Mechanical devices cannot grow bigger, so if a baby robot was ever born, it could never grow up to be an adult robot. So the only way a mechanical device can replicate is to make basically full sized copies of itself.

Of course one could imagine some sort of machine shop on wheels that could create full sized duplicates of itself. And one could imagine some parameter based code, similar to DNA, that would specify various parameters that could adjust by "mutations" in the design code, so each self-replicating machine shop on wheels was built a little different from all other machine shops on wheels and compete with them for supplies of iron, copper, and gasoline. The whole thing seems more like a horror science fiction concept than anything else. I can't rule it out as impossible, but it is so bizarre, it has no relationship to anything real.

Or one could imagine a biological creature which made gear-shaped kidney stones that all fell together to make a watch after it became an adult. Again, I cannot say this is impossible, but so unlikely, we are way off in science fiction. How would muscles power a continuously turning wheel? And how could the expense of building this ever be justified by evolution? Surely if we were to figure out the code for a genetically modified monkey with a wrist watch made of kidney stones, mutations would set in which would mess it up, and the whole thing would atrophy away. I can't see that evolution would have any selective pressure to maintain it.

My ophthamologist is a YEC.

Last year I was legally blind.

Today I have 20/20 vision.

How'd that happen?

I can guess that there was some kind of science involved, because that kind of change don't happen by prayin'!

But of course, we DON'T accept evolution by faith, do we? We accept it because of the EVIDENCE.
