Darwin hypothesized that mankind descended from apes and since the only place apes existed was in Africa he made that leap. He said that before fossils were found there. Was he "qualified?" What made someone "qualified" in 1848? He would have handed you your lunch on any of a number of topics. Including the KJV.
The simple answer to your question is. Yes.

That is an often quoted falsehood. Darwin couldn't convert before he died since he never gave up his faith.
