I've just been told that there is no such field of study as Cosmic Evolution.

Let's settle this issue once and for all.

Is Cosmic Evolution taught in higher academia?

I say YES.

First of all, QV this picture from Harvard:



Second of all, read what it says:

'The arrow of time, from origin of the Universe to the present and beyond, spans several major epochs throughout all of history. Cosmic evolution is the study of the many varied changes in the assembly and composition of energy, matter and life in the thinning and cooling Universe.'

Thirdly, GOOGLE "college courses on cosmic evolution" and see for yourself what comes up.

What say you?

Yes I did. I found an optional course at Harvard and a couple of seminars elsewhere. Is that what you consider to be teaching an entire field of study in higher academia?

Since you googled it yourself you ought to know. "Cosmic evolution" appears to be the name given to survey courses and popular science literature as a way of combining information from a wide variety of fields in a coherent and easily understandable way. It is not, itself, a field of scientific endeavor.

If everyone did it then I'd say you have a point. But a handful of people using the title on 3 or 4 seminars doesn't really have that same impact. AV just accept you chose a losing horse in this race.

I say that you need to be intellectually honest and understand that "evolution" is also simply an english word used to describe how a state of any given thing changes, evolves, over time.

While "change over time" indeed is an important part of the definition of biological evolution, you should realise that "the theory of evolution" concerns a very specific process in the field of biology - which has no relevance to any other sentence in different context where the english word "evolution" is used.


Having said that, your picture is some sort of "big picture" thing that depicts the evolution (in the english sense - not the biological sense) of the universe and everything in it from the very beginning of time till today.

That, by itself, is NOT some scientific field.
In fact, actual scientific fields dedicate themselves to just one part, within a well defined scope, of that bigger picture.

Biology is a field.
Chemistry is a field.
Astronomy.
Cosmology.
Astro physics.
etc etc etc.

All of which, are depicted on that picture, one way or another.
