is this "treble" sound like a consistent hum or squeal?

You could try a few things to confirm that they're the problem:
- Unplug them from the computer and plug a set of headphones (or other speakers if you have an old set lying around somewhere) into that same connector and see if you get the same sort of noise
- Plug the speakers into a phone's headphone connector and see if it still comes out the same
- Move them to an alternate position on your desk (very rarely you may get interference from something. Very rarely).

If you get the same kind of results with the speakers plugged into a phone or another computer, the problem is obviously the speakers. If you get the same result with a different set of headphones or speakers, then there's possibly a hardware problem with the computer if it's randomly started.

It sounds to me like they're more than likely busted and you need to invest in a new set but like other posters have said, I'd check and make sure. If you do find out it's your speakers, depending on how old and expensive they were, usually you can send them back to get replaced too. Most companies offer 5-10 year warranties on speakers. But, if they're only like $7-$20 speakers I wouldn't bother. It'd cost like $15 to send them out to get repaired.

Funny you should mention this~my old Logitech speakers had a connection where I could plug in headphones..that unit went bad. Logitech didn't have that particular part anymore and gave me an enormous discount on a replacement speaker system. Another reason I own a lot of Logitech gear :)

...well lately, my computer speakers make this "treble" sound (not sure how to describe it)

should i get new speakers?

I hooked into my A/V Surround system..sounds better than speakers hooked directly into the 'puter..That's on my desktop..
On the laptop,I run my headphones.

Typical computer speakers use cheap chip amps running 10% distortion. The best method is to run a USB cable to a USB DAC, connect that to a real stereo amp, and connect that to real speakers. Your ears will thank you.
